I don't know just how small of an area you are looking for, but there are plenty of choices in Southern Oregon. My favorite is the Grants Pass/Rogue River area. It sounds like it could be a good fit for you, too. For a small town, Grants Pass is pretty involved in art. There are monthly art nights and plenty of other opportunities in that area. I would think you fiance wouldn't have too hard of a time finding work either.
As far as other requirements, the Rogue River runs right through town, and there are lakes within an hour or so. The coast is only 2 hours from here. We are able to live out of town with no close neighbors, but only drive 15 minutes to work, or anything else we need. I love it
