You won't believe what happened today. Or maybe you will... maybe this happens to you fortunate coastal dwellers all the time... but this has never happened to me!!

So we went to the coast for the day. We went to the Dunes Overlook area. We hiked through the dunes... it's about a mile and a half - long trail... and we are just getting kinda tired and sweaty (it was hot and sunny, and we are wimps! ) and finally we get there... right at the end of the trail and we're walking down the dune and ...

A huge, beautiful bald eagle soars right over our heads! He's so close! Then he swoops down a few times and it looks as though he's playing with something in the sand, right where the water meets the beach... we're now 10 - 15 feet from him, and he's just playing! After a bit of this, he soars back up and heads back the way he came...

So we go to see what he was playing with, and guess what we find? Two whole unbroken sand dollars.

It was an amazing experience.

Now tell me - does this happen every day to you lucky ones on the coast? Or was this truly something amazing and special?

I am just blown-away.

That is a beautiful spot tiff!

I couldn't believe how warm it was on the coast today. We were shedding layers faster than a hot date on prom night!

Haggard and Tiff, LOVE the pictures. I've been loving the beach too, but have been lazy about taking the camera. I think that sometimes I take for granted the amazing beauty we are surrounded by. Thank you for reminding me! Your pictures don't even look like they can be real, they are so beautiful.

It's me again! Should I just start a new thread or should we keep this one going?

Well... we just got back from yurt camping at Washburne! Wow. We've camped now at a lot of the state parks - inland and coastal - and Washburne is now one of our favorites. We stayed in yurt D2. The camping spaces at Washburne are some of the largest I've seen at state parks. Behind and beside the yurt is a nice wooded area that our boys were able to play around in without disturbing any other campers - nice. Lots of good trees for climbing, lots of space to run around... lots of wildlife. A short hike away and you're at a really beautiful beach... wide sandy stretches... at low tide we found all kinds of sea critters. Beautiful. China Creek is right there, too... and the hiking trails are fun! They are easy for a family, even with younger kids. It's a great park for families... lots to do!

The showers are nice at Washburne, too. Nice and hot and roomy. The hosts were really nice. We ran out of firewood and they had plenty there to sell us for $4. for a fat bundle. Not too bad.

It was sunny, warm, and beautiful the whole time we were there. Flip-flops and shorts weather. At night the temp would drop, but the campfire would keep us warm. For about 20 minutes this strange fog sort of enveloped us as we were playing on the beach at Washburne... and then just as quick as it came, it gracefully moved on... so bizarre! I took pictures of it... it was so thick that we were afraid that we weren't going to be able to find our trail back, and we couldn't see very far off into the distance... it was like being inside a cotton ball, or a cloud. We'd never experienced that before on the coast - only in airplanes.

I highly recommend Washburne to anyone planning on camping along the coast. They have some really nice walk-in sites sort of towards the back of the campground that are very roomy and seem very quiet and private. There are wheel barrows there that you can use to carry all your gear to the campsite from the parking area, and restrooms are nearby. Lots and lots of trees, and those campsites, too, are further from hwy 101 so there is less of that noise as well. The two yurts are really nice, and we definitely enjoyed our stay, but we did hear the traffic from hwy 101. We plan on tent camping in the walk-in area next time!

I love your posts!!!! its like a travel blog for camping on the Oregon coast. So nice to hear more positive feedback about our beautiful coastline!
the next time you get in one of those floater fog banks, try not to think about the book/movie The Mist. hehehe.
any how, keep visiting and keep posting!!! Even living along here, I still love to hear about it, and I know Oregonbeachlover and I both appriciate another voice chiming in that its not always cold and miserable here.
Hey, have you discovered Capelookout campground up by Tillamook yet? We used to camp there a lot when I was a kid...there were some great agate beds down the spit, and once, I even found a note in a bottle from a russian fisherman. My folks and brother found a few glass floats over the years. Never me. But Im still lookin.

We've been to Cape Lookout, but haven't camped there. There are some nice "deluxe cabins" there that we've thought about reserving. For this Christmas we've rented a deluxe yurt on the coast... it will be our first Christmas spent on the coast. We thought we'd try a new thing! The deluxe yurts and cabins all have their own bathrooms and small kitchenette area... Some of the best times we've had on the coast have been during the winter months. If it works out, maybe next Christmas we'll do one of the deluxe cabins at Cape Lookout. Sounds like it would be a fun place for 4th of July, too! Hmmm...

That's so cool about the note in the bottle and the glass floats! It's amazing what you find when you spend regular time on the coast. The more we go, the more we see. It's like reading the same good book over and over again - every time you read it, you get more out of the story...

I think there are two kinds of mindsets as far as weather is concerned - those that embrace and respect it, and those that just see it as drudgery and muck. Without the sort of weather we have here, we wouldn't have the other amazing things we have here... and it's because some of the amazing things we have here, that we have the sort of weather we do. It's symbiotic. It's not always sunny here, but it's not always nasty outside, either. We have a good balance of all the sorts, and those in the know catch each while we can for different reasons!

Haggardhouseelf, you are such a BLESSING! I totally agree with everything you said!! I also love reading about your "adventures". They are absolutely wonderful. I think anyone, even if not as fortunate as to be able to come to the coast, can visualize through your words.

Cape Lookout was one of the places we used to camp at, before we were able to live on the coast. We loved it there with the nice beach and shady camping spots too. We always tried to get a spot with trees, because we went in the summer and it was hot. It was nice, after a long beach walk, to come back to a cooler spot under the trees.
