Funky Neighborhood for older fun hippies
Hi there. My parents are a fun loving/ 'hippie' /backyard gardening/eco-friendly couple that are looking to relocate to Oregon. They said they did some research on Eugene, but I told them I'd post on here to get some more info so they look at all the areas before they make the trip up there. They are looking for the kind of neighborhood where the neighbors turn their front/back yard into vegetable gardens, the neighbors get together to walk, or bbq, and definately not suburbia..something older under 200k. Smaller house, bigger yard. Just a funky, crunchy kinda vibe. Anywhere in Oregon is fine as they dont work, they're retired.
And just in case someone doesnt like the term 'hippie'...I dont mean 'hippie' in a derogatory manner, my parents are! I mean to give a name to the fun loving, all-accepting, eco-friendly people that they are
Thanks!

It does sound like Eugene would be a perfect fit for your parents. The town is very eclectic, and full of funky, down to earth people. The nieghborhoods close to the university sound like a perfect fit. Good luck on your search!

The OP post is my parents to the letter...
My votes ( and places my "hippie" parents have lived)
Eugene....for sure, and the surrounding areas.
Southern Oregon ...Rogue Valley...
Portland has pockets, but the price becomes an issue.
Good Luck, I say Eugene

Eugene sounds like their kind of place. Tell them to check out the Friendly neighborhood. The Friendly neighborhood has a website: Welcome to the Friendly Area Neighbors (FAN) website - Eugene, OR Or, if they want an up-and-coming sort of place that is currently kinda dumpy (but very "hippie") - the Whitaker neighborhood area near the Owen Rose Garden and the Grower's Market might be a good fit. There are some good coffee shops there and a new winery, and some places to hear live music... It's right on the river with the bike trail and there are some great parks in the area with community gardens and hiking trails. Here's the Whiteaker website: Whiteaker Community Council March There's also the area around Hendrick's park, but it can be kinda pricey in that area... but very cool.
They might like the coast... lots of artsy mecca's there... Yachats is a very cool place.
