You smile and people smile back! There is great food (Rocco's Pizza!) Great bands (The Chicharones!) Great places to go with the family (the zoo, OMZI!!!!) THe place is beautiful and clean! Awesome public transportation, even the homeless in Portland are better off (they have a paper filled with wonderful poems and art work, amongst many insightful articles). The place is friggin fantastic! It's got desert, ocean, mountain, city. All 4 seasons. What else could you ever want in a place? The only down fall? The meth epidemic. WHen you look at a map on a color scale of meth, Oregon is black, to say numerically it's a 10. But, to make up for that, just shred papers before you throw them away!
I enjoyed your post! I don't know anything about the meth part, but I agree that I LOVE living in Oregon. We have everything just like you said. I love the beaches in Oregon (all free to the public too), but there is a lot more to Oregon and all of it is stunningly beautiful!

I was born and raised in Oregon and moved to Colorado for a year with my husband who is in the Army.
My husband signedup for 6 more years just so that we could move back to the NW. If there was a base in Oregon we would move back there in a HEARTBEAT!

But there isn't, so we are at the closest possible thing, Ft. Lewis, WA.
As for right now though, ym daughter and I are back in Oregon while my husband is in Iraq.

We LOVE Oregon and everyone I know that has come from other places LOVE Oregon!
It's so beautiful and the produce is FRESH and inexpensive, as compared to Colorado.
Plus fresh amazing seafood!!! And the beach and all of the GREEN! It doesn't get any better!

Default North of 40th

I currently live on 18th and Hawthorne. I love the area (especially the friendly/family atmosphere) but am looking for a one bedroom that allows dogs (right now I'm in a studio).

I love the area between 18 and 40th (between Division and Stark) but I have never ventured past 40th. I know that the rent gets cheaper the higher you go up, but I was wondering if someone could tell me what the areas are like as you venture up that way.

Thanks!

I am 28 years old, living in Colorado Springs Colorado and I hate it here. Don't get me wrong I love Colorado, just not Colorado Springs. My girlfriend and I are really wanting to move to Beaverton this summer. Is it pretty easy to find your way around Beaverton and Portland? If anybody knows, how would Beaverton Oregon compair to Colorado Springs Colorado? Is Beaverton a better place to live? How is the economy in Beaverton and Portland? How are the prices on apartments?

If you want the bests of all worlds, city life/country... Anywhere around a "major city" aka, cities around Portland, Salem, Corvallis, Eugene, and bend. Anywhere within 15 miles of those cities offers the "Oregon Feel" with the convenience of large companies. Portland area cities can be a bit tricky, you can literally go from the slums to the snobs by going from one side to the other, east to west. If you want less big city feel try the other 4 areas, if not stick around Portland. If you want central, located in the middle of everything, do the Salem area and surrounding cities. Its at most a hour and a half to everywhere (other "major" cities, coast, mtn resorts, lakes, rivers). My last word of wisdom of Oregon, its a lot friendlier than most of the U.S., its rains but its mostly a drizzle 9 months of the year, but its beautiful no matter where you live; coast, valley, eastern, southern, mountains, metros areas, tiny towns. There is no pollution or crap on the side of the road. Hope you all move here, enjoy it, and have families. *** I remembered a few more things about here, its usually cheaper for housing and everyday items, "rush hours" aren't that bad, speed limits are low at their highest, and jobs are NOT hard to come by. Ironically, larger cities though have less jobs per person than the little towns. Probably that hometown feel/community that most of them have. ***

Unfortunately I have to agree with the Lake Oswego post. We moved to Lake Oswego almost 2 years ago. We have had an incredibly negative experience with the schools and people. We have 3 in elementary and high school. Our kids are involved in many activities and it is very unfortunate that the parents and kids are very materialistic, competetive and not nice at all. I love Portland and the surrounding areas (other than Lake Oswego), but I have heard many bad stories about the Portland public school system, which makes me a little scared to move into that. With the economy the way it is now the funding has been cut tremendously.
I would love to find a great little community here but am really not sure where to go. I want safe, good schools in a smaller community that is friendly.

We dont want to go to Grants Pass unless we have to but have thought more about places outside Portland or somewhere on the coast.
The only good things out here are nice safe neighborhoods for my kids to play in and great schools. They arent closing programs or shortening school year days like I remember Oregon doing. Right now my kids can play outside with their friends without worrying about somone trying to kidnap them or steel their stuff. But here we have humidity, tornado warnings, big bad thunder storms, snakes, recluse spides, chiggers, bugs, bugs, bugs, humidity and oh yeah, bugs. I have never seen more fleas or ticks in my life. You cant walk on the grass or sit on it. They have copperheads, cottonmouth, and water moccasin snakes here. And it some areas tarantulas the size of dessert plates. Yuck!
We miss the west coast mentality as well. We just spent 10 days in So Cal and cant wait to get back to the west coast. Oh yeah, we love to camp. Cant do that here unless you have a trailer with air cond. Silly huh.
Wow, where do live in MO. I've never heard of anyone having your problems.

We had a mild summer last year in St. Louis and I had my 3rd floor balcony door open most every day with no screen. Beyond a few random flys, that my cat thoroughly enjoyed, we saw no bugs.

If you live in the woods wouldn't you expect the critters and just have an exterminator spray the house once a month?

Not in Oregon, no - with the exception of termites once, we've never sprayed for any bug.

Oh, good idea! Let's move out to the woods to be closer to nature and then fill our indoor air reservoir with toxic chemicals that we breathe in all day so we won't have to look at other living things crawling around our living spaces. And if the toxic fumes give you a headache...just cut off your head.

My boyfriend and I are looking to move to Oregon. He is currently attending Le Cordon Bleu Culinary College, so we are trying to find a good place to live around fine dining restaurants or big resorts. Any ideas on some places to consider? We are only planning on renting for awhile, but we don't want to spend too much for an apartment or a house. We also have a year old daughter, so we would like the neighborhoods to be safe. We don't mind commuting to work so we kind of prefer living right outside big cities, but still not too far of a drive. Please give us some advice.
