My wife lived in Milwaukie prior to us getting married. Milwaukie is ok, nothing special in my opinion. It is an older community with really nothing going for it!! I guess it depends on how old you are, family, and hobbies. Housing will be cheaper vs. other areas (West Linn, Lake Oswego, ect).

To drive from Milwaukie to downtown Portland is probably 20 minutes via freeway.

Undesirable places in Portland is a tough question. North Portland is normally not the best area. I am partial to West Linn and Lake Oswego, grew up in West Linn and loved it. It is pricey so housing may be too high. I would look at Oregon City if you like Milwaukie. Better in my opinion and just up the 205 a few minutes.

Hey~ I'm in Elkhorn and relocating to Portland through my husband's job once school is out. Small world....
Am not overly familiar with that area, other than a couple of visits myself, but I think it definitely depends on what you're looking for. Urban/suburban? Family friendly? Artsy? Trendy, etc....
We're a family of 5 (3 small kids) so we're looking more on the SW side...Tualatin/Tigard/Sherwood area. My understanding is that most areas there are safe, atleast from violent-type crimes. Apparantly Gresham is a bit seedier only because of some poverty issues (someone correct me if I'm wrong here).
What's taking you out there?? And good luck to you!!

Hello. I live close to Milwaukie and I do my grocery shopping there. I find it to be a very friendly town. There are some lovely homes and parks and there are some quaint older apartments along the river that I've always thought would make nice homes. It has kind of a small town..almost rurual vibe. True..nothing really special..but I always feel safe there...and you can always drive or bike into Portland for more excitement!

hope that helps!
