My East Wood rual neighborhood is a housing development. This used to be a nice field my friends and I used to have rock wars in, and shoot BB guns. Its Ugly what they did to my hood. The Highschool looks like somewhere I did not go. It looks like some kind of prison if you ask me. What happend to the Artic circle by the highschool. I know change is constant, but I was hoping to visit some of my haunts. The JR looks exactly like time forgot, Eastwood needs to have some newer buildings. Whats up with all the Asain restaurants. What happened to apple peddler Also, what the hell happened to the good real estate prices here....I can not imagine that the employment keeps up with the cost of houses. Californians could not be resonsible for everthing...I say this because I know thats what people are going to say. Still I took my kid to Stewart park...a place that I enjoyed as a kid and it look exactly the same. I would love to return here some day when I don't have to have a good job and take my future grand kids around and walk on the bike trails here.
The high school is a vast improvement over the old facility. You should see the new auditorium! Never heard of an apple peddler in town, but there are still plenty of farm produce stands outside of town.

Cheap real estate prices went away with the depression. Roseburg died several times, from the 1980s through the 1990s, and you could pick up real estate for nothing, right behind the wave of bankruptcies. Roseburg re-invented itself as a retirement community. Assisted living facilities went in all over town, and developers started marketing to retirees with big wads of cash. Then the wave of low interest rates hit about 5 years ago, and homeowners took the opportunity to do substantial home upgrades while refinancing the mortgage, leaving them with the same payments as before, but much nicer homes. You are going to pay for the improvements. Most people were conservative, and locked in a fixed rate mortgage. They will just sit tight until the housing market turns around again.

Asian restaurants come with a growing Asian population, and a more sophisticated dining public. Yes, you can buy sushi for lunch in downtown Roseburg. It's not a logging town any more. Pizza parlors have lost favor as the customer base aged. The boomers are watching their cholesterol. If you want "old Roseburg," Pete's Drive-In still offers car hop service on Harvard.

Apple Peddler was a restaurant that used to be in the Dell parking lot. The little one one the south side of the parking lot. Its an asian joint now. Used to be a Sambos before that. Other changes: My fathers Montgomery Wards building is now a big car dealership. They seem to have added a new exit with a home Depot, and a Lowes right down the street. In 50 years southerlin and Roseburg will be one city.

That Chinese place is a Chinese buffet. The food is mediocre. The best Chinese in Roseburg right now is Lee's, on the corner of NE Stephens and Roseland. I think the building started life as an A & W, and it still looks like a drive-in.

Roseburg's Urban Growth Boundary extends as far as Winchester. The water treatment plant is right there at the Winchester Dam.

I moved to the Roseburg area in 1975 at the age of 10--so I've pretty much grown up in the area. Although there are rednecks in Douglas County, the majority of the population here don't have "Get R Dun" on their 4wd trucks Case and point---I drive an acura and I don't have any bumper stickers or a gun rack in my car or on my four wheeler. I have a four wheeler because I ride around my 20+ acres to look at wildlife and I take the hour trip to the coast to ride for miles on the beach in Coos Bay. Roseburg is centrally located as we're an hour from Diamond Lake (snow in the winter and fishing in the summer), an hour from the coast as mentioned, an hour from Eugene where (retail) shopping is much better than Roseburg and right up the North Umpqua River you will find beauty that most only believe exists in paintings.
Real estate prices increased a few years ago and it was difficult to find affordable housing for county residents; however, that's changed. Prices have come down and in my opinion we are a little less than Eugene. Eugene definetly has a lot more cultural activities and choices. We do have local art fairs, business social functions as well as several clubs that explore the natural beauty of the area.
Yes, our commissioners are a joke---but at least they made it to Youtube!

For me, I thank my dad for having the drive to move us up here. It was a huge change from our southern California beach area home. However, my husband and I have successfully raised 2 productive sons who work professional jobs and support themselves and pay their bills efficiently without relying on the timber industry. My husband and I both work (and not in the woods), don't drink really to speak of. Well... I guess we have did have a Corona last weekend while relaxing by the pool. This place isn't perfect and there are improvements to be made here in Roseburg~ but I think you'll find that there really isn't perfect anywhere.

People here have historically depended on resource extraction industries, and a blue-collar culture still predominates. Many residents are more preoccupied with being able to finish their beer than being able to finish high school.
Roseburg is in one of the most beautiful areas of the state (thousand valleys). The Umpqua River Valley is different from most of the rest of Oregon in that it tends to be quite warm in summer (temps over 100F are common). Winters are slightly milder and shorter as well. The overall climatic variation through the year is pronounced, yet within a nice range of temperatures. Falls are lovely. Average wind velocity here is almost the lowest in the nation. The area between both Roseburg and the coast and Roseburg and Crater Lake is a paradise for outdoor activities.
There are a lot of nice people in Douglas County and some beautiful historic homes there, BUT....Roseburg is still very much a lumber town and whether or not you can deal with the "redneck factor" is something only you can answer (if you have a 4-wheel and a shotgun, you'll fit in fine). Everytime I go through Roseburg I breathe a sigh of relief when I get back into the Eugene area. I enjoy the outdoor activities in the surrounding areas, but Roseburg needs a good deal of gentrifying before I, myself, would be able to live there.

Hmmm...everytime we go to Eugene from Roseburg, we think-"what a bunch of hippie, environmentalist, liberal, whack jobs" and breathe a sigh of relief when we get home. As for our beer, well, we just know what tastes better. Not a bunch of fancy, tastes like a cat died in my mouth wine that the folks up North seems to favor so much. By the way-I finished high school, college, own my own house, have a stable job, own a shotgun & a 35mm revolver! What's wrong with blue-collar job anyways? That's how you get the stuff you use everyday.

Please don't get our info wrong. I was raised in Myrtle Creek and helped my dad build the welcome sign that says "Gateway to the hundred valleys of the Umpqua" If you don't like the area-stay the heck away. We probably don't want you here anymore than you want to be here. People like you love the area, move here, and then change it. What's up with that?

So, go back to your no-deoderant wearing, tye-dyed clothes, birkenstock wearing, LIBERAL, ways and leave us alone.

met my exwife in Myrtle Creek...I have never seen so many trailor parks in such a small space. All the "you know your a redneck jokes" apply here to myrtle creek. They go to Roseburg to see the big city (ha ha ha). To the person who wrote the quote about the "Liberals" above" The person you wrote about was being a jerk, but you are also being unkind. Sit down, pour youself a cup of grandmas moonshine and calm down.

Im no hippie but I am a liberal. At least by Roseburgs standards. Nothings wrong with being liberal. Ben Franklin was a liberal. Most of the libs I associate with go to church, own a weapon, and use underarm deoderant (old spice is my fav), and have commission sales jobs, which I know is not hard labor but is still considered blue collar. If I did not mention that I vote for dems, you might even like me. I can tell you this. I have roots going back 30 years in Roseburg and its more liberal than you think. a good percentage of the town is from Liberal southern california. I hope you take the jokes about Myrtle creek in good humor...its still a very beautiful place with all the mountains. Im knocking it because of an exwife, and that fact I lost a State championship match in wrestling to the same guy twice.

Did you have anything to do with the "Streets Patrolled by the Vigilantes for Justice" sign? I knew I liked Myrtle Creek the first time I crossed the city limits.
