Well, since you are in Oregon, and like the Bend area, except for the high desert thing, did you check out the town of Sisters? It doesn't have the humidity of the west side of the mountians, it gets some snow, but does not get as much and it isn't as cold as Montana.

Howdy LadyFlyFsh................
imho i think Grants Pass has more sunny winter days then Roseburg. We get our vittles thar. We have happily lived in the mountains west of Wolf Creek/Sunny Valley fer over 4 lustrums. We love it deerly.....................
2 winters we did spend around Fort Mojave/Bullhead City, AZ. We had a Great time. Some folks like it around Yuma in the winter.
Perhaps you wood enjoy a few winter months in northern AZ area & your summers back in MT (Big Sky Country) we hav friends in Kalispell..............................
Have a Wonderful Evening........................

Wow!. . . I live in Sutherlin 15 minutes N. of Roseburg and I for one thank God Kittleman was NOT reelected. She and S. Palin are twins. Great as a next door neighbor but not as an elected official. Just as in anything you get out what you put in. In many ways Steve is right but the people here are good and because of the terrain I doubt it will ever grow much. They are however building a wine institute at the Community College between Sutherlin and Roseburg. If you remember Santa Rosa in the 1970's Roseburg is pretty similar except for fly fishing on the Umpqua, real moutains to the east and mushrooms probably closer than Casadero and probably as much rain as Casadero!

Just remembered ladyflyfish wanted winter sunshine? Try Glide,a town 20 minutes E. of Roseburg along the flyfishin Umpqua River and fairly well out of most of any fog.

I'm not used to posting and find myself way behind but stillthink I have words of wisdom even though you say you don't want anything in California. You'll loose out on mushrooms but i'm going to suggest for your bones between Redding and Red Bluff espescially toward Lassen, Minneral,Mill Creek, Hat Creek or NE of Chico I think it's Oroville, or W of Redding Whiskeytown or Old Shasta. Good Sacramento bottom soil between Redding and Red Bluff and not far from fly fishing I think toward Lassen or Mount Shasta. Good Luck!

Hi from Phoenix Arizona I woke up this morning at 0430 am, and as my wife and I are looking to buy land in or around Roseburg for our retirement in 3 years, I found my way to this forum through the internet. Now I am Eurpean (English) and my wife is American we have lived in dry tempratures of upto 120 degrees for 8 years so far and long for 4 seasons in a year. The reason for writing this is to first to say I am sorry to Ladyflyfish that her plans did not work out, but mainly to congratulate EVERYONE that contributes to this forum. It has been very helpful to read opinions about the area, things that you might not possible know by visiting, like crime, weather and the lives of people that live there. The only downside was the negative back and forth of some of the replies, everybody has a right to there own opinion, and I was taught by my parents that politics, religion or sex was not discussed in polite company. But if our plans work out and we get to Roseburg I could well contribute again to this forum, Once again thanks to everyone.

Greetings everyone and especially all of those who've sent their well wishes to me and my crappy joints! I spent the summer back in Montana and now ...drum roll please.... I have moved....to..... BEND! yes, Bend. And, so far I'm really liking it. It's not so far to get over to the damp side of the mountains but I can take advantage of the blue skies, sun and dry weather on the east side of the Cascades. Bend is designed for outdoorsey people and I think I fit in just great...although I think there must be some kind of prerequisite to moving to Bend that you must own a kayak! LOL Never seen so many kayaks and mountain bikes...but I guess I like that better than pickups loaded with dead animals in the beds. So, again, thanks everyone for all your thoughtful comments and I'll keep you posted. LFF

Aloha all.. I am Roseburg, Oregon bound!! Finally sold our condo for lots of $ in Waikiki, Hawaii and found a lovely home in Roseburg. The locals don't want you to know this, but Roseburg IS the up and coming WINE COUNTRY of the Nation! Imagine that! Check out the Umpqua land and you might be surprised how rich the soil and perfect growing conditions exist in this small hamlet... and best of all? It's been found out! Yup! You wine buffs check the score for grape land in the nation and there you will find ROSEBURG, OREGON is rated TOP FIVE in the NATION! Wine and the next thing you know there will be music.. then art...... then intellectual thought.... I can't wait to get there and check into the community college and local arts programs.. Such a pretty lil berg and seems the old part of town needs a bit of a lift up.

Zetta, Good luck to you in Roseburg. I have friends in Lookingglass who first intended to grow grapes but instead have horses and grow hay. If you can find the kind of land you like and can afford it, then all the power to you. For me, I found the land far too expensive for what I wanted to do and housing the same so it was just too pricey for me as well as damp. I hope it's all you hope and want it to be.

I think Roseburg is the best bargain on the West Coast. Moist, but a bit less gloomy than parts north, long growing season, and truly wine country. If you can find the culture you want there, and a job, why not give it a try? Obviously all the real estate if still settling out from the big boom, but Roseburg never inflated nearly as bad at the Rogue Valley, Bend, or the S. Coast. So, probably less to fall. Lovely country there, and I do believe it is a good investment over the long term. The issue to research is how entrenched the current right-wing culture is. Perhaps things are moderating, but I don't know.
