Saffy, I'm interested in knowing, what "aweful comdtions here" are you referring to, that are added to, by Californians (who have fled their beloved home state due to all the others who've come and made California so miserable)?

My family moved often, and I grew up pretty much "everywhere" but I spent a lot of time in California (Southern Cal and the Central Valley and the Sierras). My father chose to retire in So Cal, while I chose to live in the Portland area. The main difference is people that I see is that in So Cal, the OUTWARD appearance is much more important. Everyone (middle- to upper-middle-class) has a gardener, very nice landscaping, a nice car, takes the car to the car wash often, has nice clothes. In Portland, those things are not really so important (unless you live in the few trendy areas are snobby areas, like Lake Oswego). It's rare to hear the "gardener air blower" symphony during the week.

So if someone has a gardener they are snobby?
If someone lives in a nice area, they are ? not so nice?

Being from both ends of the spectrum, rich and poor. There are people that have social disfunctions in both classes.

I think it has very little to do with means and everything to do with mean

Judging someone for benefitting from hard work is pathetic.
Just as judging someone for not having the were with all to gain material is pathetic.

If there were not business owners, where would the jobs come from?
If there were not workers, where would the businesses come from?

Is this so difficult to understand, or are we a society of jealousy over reality.

The geographical differences between SoCal and other states plays a big roll in how people behave there. Here are some things to consider.

SoCal rarely rains compared to WA/OR. Why shouldn't CA'ians take pride in being able to keep their cars clean? The CA dry/dusty climate allows/requires that. It also allows people to wear the nicest clothes and makeup. Can't do much of that in the rain and snow and humidity, can you? SoCal has the bikini weather, which causes all the women to worry about how they look come summer. Other places don't worry about it, because they don't have the same situation. Which allows them to be good and judgemental toward Californians. Meanwhile, CA'ians are more healthy for it.

In less developed places where real estate is easier to come by, people don't worry as much about housing looks. But when you finally can afford that half million dollar dump in CA with the 10' yard, you are so thrilled you just have to make your yard pretty. I know I did. Having less of something has a way of making you appreciate it more. On the other hand, in places like GA, where I live now, that have tons of cheap land, no one does a thing with it. They don't know how to thin out their trees to grow full and beautiful like CA's, they just let everything grow like weeds in a big messy tangle. It hides the new CA'ian's house next door better. And so what if it creeps into the n'bor's yard. Isn't the whole country like that? (Hint: they don't need no stinkin Californians to tell them how to do it better!)

If anyone thinks Californians are vain for having nice yards, just wait til you move to a state that can't grow half of what CA can, and doesn't know how to use what they have, because they've just recently left the redneck age. That will change your whole perspective. Also, you can't mow in the rain. 1/2 year of rain in OR/WA? Oh well. There goes the neighborhood. Got wood rot from rain? Can't fix it til you can paint it. That much has nothing to do with attitudes.

We saw lots of heavily tatooed young people in OR. Lots missing teeth from meth too. I wouldn't be surprised if the gloom half the year contributes to this. If I had to choose between heartbreak and stuck up, well dressed, materialistic, you know which I'm going to choose for my kids to be around. One inspires failure, the other success. Altho, there's probably as much meth in CA.

Westward...wow those are some very interesting observations and I can totally see what you are talking about. Having lots of sunshine does allow folks do get out more in their yards. And yeah, washing the car is a chore most people do on a regular basis.

I am curious what part of Oregon you were in where you saw the young people that were heavily tattooed with the meth mouth.

I heard someone say once that Oregonians were "insular and odd." He said that many people in OR have never left the state. It's not my opinion and I'm not sure what he meant by it, but maybe others have thoughts?
