PNW sounds like that other guy who used to post on these forums and bash Oregon left and right with nothing more than ignorant rantings from based on his opinions from the media.
Meth? Sure it's here. It's everywhere. If you're that unaware, you're in sad shape. Gangs? Sure, we've got'em. Not every place the way PNW would have you think. You don't find grafitti everywhere. Most of the gangs are wannabes. You don't have the type of gang issues that you get in South Central L.A. Bend is a cesspool? Why? Because this guy hates Californians. Here's a news flash for out of staters reading this forum: MOST PEOPLE IN OREGON DON'T CARE WHERE YOU'RE FROM. The reason is that most people are intelligent and they've gotten over that stupid McCall mentality of "Visit, but don't stay" which turned into "Californians are wretched monsters". The only people who really care about where you're from are the stupid, in-bred mouthbreathers. To the person from Florida, if you come here to visit, you will be treated warmly. Same thing if you come to stay. If my attitude sounds bad, it's because I'm sick to death of imbeciles making the state and its residents look bad. I'm sure you're intelligent enough to read an attitude into a person's postings. When someone gives nothing but opinions with no facts and when those opinions are hideously bilious, it's obvious what type of person wrote them. |

My Fellow Americans -
I have been entertained (to say the least) by reading the posts which you have offered up. I am a resident of Southern California and like many SO Cal brethren, have been looking to relocate my family from the particular area in which I live. You may have noticed that I chose my verbage carefully to reflect that I am a resident of Southern California. Apparently it matters (to whom I am uncertain) where you live, or come from. First and foremost, like you, I am an American who enjoys the freedoms established by honorable, brave men and women who have given their very best, and at times paid with their lives, to ensure WE have freedoms to enjoy. Anyhow: I have been looking to move my family out of Southern California for numerous reasons. Wherever we finally choose to relocate, you can be sure that we will do our best to fit in and be productive citizens of that local culture but underneath the flashy exterior I will continue to be an AMERICAN! Not a Californian, Oregonian, Texan, etc. Where in SO Cal do you live and why do you want to move? My family and I live in Ventura (a city and county located between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara Counties). Ventura is a wonderful Southern California beach community that has varied terrain from sandy beaches to 9000 foot high mountain ranges (one of the very few ranges in the country that runs west to east. Ventura, like many west coast counties (no matter the state) also has a "Mediterranean" type climate (some misinformed poster that goes by "QunitesCinna" mistakenly claimed that only Oregon had this type of climate, so much for that "masters degree"! The "Med" climate has less to do with the number of days the sun is actually out than it does with rain cycles, moisture content, various weather patterns, etc. It just sounds romantic to say we have a Mediteranean climate. Anyhow. Ventura has a great economy, endless recreational opportunities, a great cultural community, a healthy employment portfolio, one of the nations most beautiful national parks (Channel Islands - check them out sometime) and TWO military bases that keep our county hopping. We have great schools, endless coffee houses, friendly folks (but they are becoming fewer and far between) and a buffet table of religious organizations and churches! BUT! 1) Our real estate market is thru the roof! Society in general is becoming more self serving and less polite. My family and I are career renters and frankly we would like to afford the opportunity known as the "American Dream". This is not feasible in Ventura's real estate market. We can purchase a home here, sure, but who the heck wants to pour out $3000 for a monthly mortgage? Not I says the wise man. So our search continues. 2) I feel the walls closing in. We took many Katrina "refugees", and we have more folks move INTO California everymonth than we have people moving out. 3) I need more space. 4) California has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation 5) we have a foreigner for a governor 6)Our state is home to 2 of the most liberal female senators on "the hill" (Feinstein and Boxer) and 7) I need more space. I have read with vigorous enthusiasm, many comments bashing folks from So Cal and I have to say that we rightfully deserve it! We do. Admit it. You will be hard pressed to find a So Cal transplant that has not bitched about the way Oregon does things. Or that Medford closes down early or Klamath Falls has dopers, or Douglass County issues way too many gun permits....whine whine whine. We ***** when we're in Southern California that people drive like maniacs but then ***** when we relocate that everyone drives like an "old fart". We hate overpriced homeowners associations but offer to help establish one when we move up north because that seems like the only right way to develop funding for road repairs or new sewers, or whatever. We hate the crowds and despise the solitude! Then, my personal favorite, we complain that real estate is outta this world but we just unloaded "2" homes in Cali for 40 acres, a mule, and a custom built cabin outside of Gresham! Southern Californians are looking to part ways with the fast paced lifestyle we know while holding onto the things we despise because we havent either been offered alternatives, trained in the ways of Oregon thought process, or we are suffering from slow pace culture shock and havent established our Columbia River sea legs yet! I have been looking around Northern California for a suitable home and have become a great proponent of seperating the Golden State into two seperate and distinct individual states. Northern California and Mexifornia, er Southern California . Believe me, in my personal experiences I have found that Nor Cal residents view So Cal as a sesspool of gluttonous pigs. We live like locusts; using up our overburdened water supply and then moving on to the next waterin hole, over taxing, and pillaging that resource into extinction! If our own northern neighbors view us like this how can we expect any less from our brothers in Oregon? What do you like about Oregon that makes you want to relocate? The state is beautiful, the folks are friendly, the air is clean and the water is clear. The gun laws are a little more realistic (but be mindful some liberal will want to try and challenge them) and hunting and trapping are still viable ways to feed your family. Yes. I can go to the store and make purchases of processed meats and foods but there is no finer, leaner, more 'organic' way to feed your family then by harvesting natures bounty. And yes, wildlife biologists know exactly how much a herd of elk or covey of quail can be culled while still keeping wildlife numbers healthy. By the way, it is the fees from my hunting license and tags that keeps those biologists employed, not your PETA donations! Life appears to be a bit slower and I think folks are a bit more polite where, in my experiences, you will still hear yes sir and yes ma'am! Why don't you move to Nor Cal instead of crossing over to Oregon? Because I would still be within the boundaries of the state of California We're not trying to discourage you from moving to Oregon but why not move to Arizona? An over abundence of Californians (they complain too much) and the real estate market has been over bloated by greedy Californian transplants. Then what about Nevada? I have a family remember? They allow prostitution. With the exception of Clark County, home of Las Vegas. I guess it's ok to gamble and then go to Nye county next door (home of Parhump) for hookers but you can't gamble and have seedy women at the same time! Go figure. A sin is a sin in God's view! OK so welcome to Oregon. Do you have any advice for those who have either moved to Oregon or are thinking of moving to Oregon? Yes I do. When in Rome, "Act like the Romans do"! A poster by the name of "Clear2land" seems to offer sound advice. Listen to him/her. The advice is to treat others the way you want to be treated. I wonder if Clear2land is a believer because his/her posts have scriptural overtones...hhhmmm Are you a Brother? Brother? So, treat folks well, be polite, serve others before you even think of serving yourself. Contribute to your new home. Get involved in your new community. You just may have a great idea you picked up in Cali that can indeed make life a little simpler for everyone in Oregon. Don't bash Oregonians or lift Californians higher than others. We all have positive and negative aspects to us, we're human. We are predestined to get things wrong anyhow. Make the best of your situation. You are an American. Act like one. Does it matter what state you reside in? When I finally move to OregaforniaTexakhloma I'm still going to be an American...that speaks Spanish. Does that matter? Probably not! I will finally have my family in a community that makes us happy, doing things that are important to us. Living our life in a matter that is pleasing to God. Oh wait, I forgot to mention that I am a Christian...shoot! Will I be banished from Bend? Nope. My Christian brothers are waiting for me to arrive so look out you atheiests.....oh yea. Don't forget to be kind to your local atheiests too. Good luck with your new home! |

Sorry to sound like some other posters but Oregon, all areas of it are facing the problems you are listing as reasons to move. I think all us natives that are whining are just running out of fingers to put in the water retaining stucture, I am sure it looks better relative to what you are dealing with but the population increases, higher taxes, ect are catching up, please it is the USA and we do have no moving restrictions but depending on your age you may not be able to retire here, I know I will not be able to afford it. good luckLast edited by seven of nine; 01-15-2008 at 10:00 AM.. I've spent my entire life watching the influx of people, particularly Californians, pretty much destroy our Oregon way of life. So I really think we "mouth-breathing" long-time natives have a right to our opinions. Trust me on this one: We've earned 'em... a thousand times over, in fact. |

The logging industry that use to provide living wages was primarily destroyed by certain native and non native influences. Other than a little farming, a little fishing and some professional positions there would be no work for people to survive in this beautiful state if it were not for growth. It is a selfish mindset to keep others from the opportunity of enjoying this piece of the USA. I have met no one with your opinion of outsiders in the 15 yrs I have lived here and the 20+ other yrs that I had been visiting here. Your pov is not going to change a thing, it is just going to make you look selfish, and unappreciative of what others bring to a community. So go ahead and keep your list of negatives. They'll bring you no joy.... freedom (to live where we please....).... |

Bend and Medford are both the absolute worst places to be in the former State of Oregon. The landscape is blighted with Californicators. They are like an Oncologist promoting cancer.

Ventura IS nice. I've lived here 20 years. I can afford to stay...however, I'm looking forward to the wonderful NEW things Oregon has to offer. I mean, how many times can you go to Ojai, Santa Barbara, Cambria, Cancun or Vegas? I can't wait to be more central to new adventures in Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Canada. I can't wait to be able to do some snowboarding in actual snow that isn't a 6 hour drive away. In a perfect world, we could all have houses in several different states. I'm from Nevada. My family is from Montana and Wyoming. None of us are the type to stay in one place our whole lives because it just gets too boring. Why should it matter if people "come from" anywhere? I'm thinking I should put my Nevada plates back on my car when I move to Oregon. Will that be more acceptable? ![]() |

I have every right to my opinion. I've earned it.

What others bring? You're referring, I assume, to the crime, traffic, pollution, crappy attitudes, bad driving, overcrowding... oh, and let's not forget the whining and complaining about our Oregon weather. It's been my experience that those are the things all those California transplants have brought here over the past 40+ years. |

The indigenous peoples probably earned a right to b*tch about all the foreign transplants as well when the Europeans ravaged America. We weren't here first, but we sure act like it. My brother-in-law who has lived in Eugene for 30 years will occasionally go on a rant about Californians. I guess he forgot he was born and raised in a gated beach community in Malibu.
