Default Are dogs allow to roam free on Seaside or Cannon Beach?

I am planning a trip to the Oregon coast soon and would love to bring my Lab as he loves the ocean to swim and do some digging on the beach. I have been to West Port beach in Wasington and everyone had their dogs off leash.
If this is a problem so there another beach on the Oregon where my dog friendly buddy can play?
Thank you.

We always take our dog with us and she loves to walk on the beach. Only problem is she likes to chase the birds, too! One time she wasn't paying attention until she hit the cold waters of the Pacific @ Cannon Beach...scared her to death! And paranoid me...don't want her getting washed out to sea. I can't imagine that the west coast of Oregon would be a good place for doggies to swim but rather to run free on the sand. Maybe I'm wrong...

I am pretty sure the leash laws apply on the beach. We take our dog and he is ALWAYS on the leash. I have seen a couple of people take their dog off leash, but honestly not often. There are lots of dogs, seagulls, and kids on the beach.

Why is the Oregon coast known for a big under toe?
My dog use to fetch in the Washington State coast
and always saw most dogs off leash.
In San Francisco a place called Fort Funston is known
for the biggest off leash park. On weekends you see
anywhere from 50 to 200 dogs off leash and is basically
an ocean beach. Wide open with over 800 acres.
I absolutely love that place.

On Cannon beach it's probably best to leash your dog until you're sure it won't be a problem.

The Seaside beaches up to Ft Stevens though, are a different story.
If you go a little farther north to Gearhart there is vehicular beach access.
If you have an adequate vehicle, you can drive for miles and miles on the beach north to Ft Stevens.
Even if you can't drive your car on the beach, there are several access points north of Seaside where it would be an easy hike after parking.
Find a place where there aren't any people and go for it!!
A word of caution, there will be people driving up and down the beach. Although there is a speed limit of 25mph (I think) people can and will speed.
Even in the summer, it can get foggy, and people aren't always paying close attention.
Please don't let your dog get hit by a car. It's not like it's a highway or anything, but summer weekends can be busy on the beach.
There will be plenty of gulls and pelicans to chase so be sure you will be able to recall your dog if it gets too excited.
Also there is always a bunch of dead and decaying animal and plant matter so watch out for that!
It might be tasty to your dog but will make him sick.
If your dog has never tasted seawater, it's almost a given the dog will get thirsty and lap some up before it discovers that it's nasty.
Bring some paper towels or something to clean up the after effects on the drive home, if you catch my drift!
Have fun! The slope of the beach is pretty gradual there so he'll be able to run in the water and have fun without the danger of getting sucked out to sea by an undertow, unless you do something dumb like throw a ball way out into the surf.
If the surf is rough, be very, very, careful!
I love to see dogs running and playing on the beach!

Just FYI: We were on Cannon Beach on a weekday and there probably weren't another half dozen people within view. I wouldn't let my little girl run away and become a problem for others. I had her leash with me, just let her go free for a while. And she loved it!

mmcguy is on a distinguished road
More dogs off leash than on leash at Cannon Beach once you get south of the rock or north of downtown. For weekends with MANY more people, keeping the dog on leash is advisable. That being said, as long as your dog is under vouice command, you'll be fine.

^^^ Agree 100%. Just use good judgement and you'll be OK.

I hope all the dog owners use pooper scoopers at the beach! Otherwise the ocean quality will be pretty dismal!
