need recommondations for Oregon Coast Vacation next week
Hi all!
Hubby and I are coming up your way on a 10 day trip and guess who hasn't made any reservations yet ? , Yep...me !
We want to stay 2 days on the southern coast between Gold Beach and Brookings. From there we visit with friends in Newport and then Mcminnville, attend an antique show in Portland, go to the Oregon Country Faire, outside of Eugene and then stay 2 days around Coos Bay, Charleston or ? (Sounds like fun, doesn't it?)
So the part I need help with is the 2 days in Gold Beach/Brookings and then 2 days in Coos Bay/Charleston, (or I guess that could include Bandon, too...... )
Could you guys help me out with hotel recommendations, in those 2 areas (under $100, I hope) maybe on the beach or a river, or......, restaurants you like, sights we should not miss, AND most important to my husband ; close by places to fish.
Thanks in advance, Mrs. Oregon Bound

We stayed at the Shilo Inn (chain) ON THE BEACH in Newport (if you don't want to invade friends) just last month. It was $89 a night. It's a GREAT hotel.
Got the reservation on Hotels.com where we booked ALL our Oregon Reservations.

I live in the valley but have been working at the beach (newport) last couple of weeks. Its been windy every day but one. I gets frustrating sand blowing in your face, door practicly gets ripped off the hinges every time I open the job trailer, working a 100 mph pace with a long sleeve shirt and sweat shirt and hardly even break a sweat. Man I hope it lays down for you. I see all these people going down to the beach pulling the hood strings tight around their head and holding their coat fronts like their alaska, kinda sucks. I do remember a trip we made to Lincoln City about 10-12 years ago and it hit 100 deg that day! very rare for Or coast and we still talk about it!

You might be interested in this article that was in today's paper: Secret Sea Cave
I guess it's not so secret anymore!
We really love Shore Acres near Sunset Bay... drive along the Cape Arago hwy and park and stop and hike around, down to the beach areas, climb around the headlands and sand cliffs... it's a great area to spot grey whales and all kinds of other wildlife. Bring binoculars, but there have been times during high tide, usually around 8 in the evening or so, that the whales came in so close we didn't need them... very cool. Find a tide table booklet so you know when the high and low tides are...
We've stayed at several of the Best Westerns along the coast and they were all very clean and comfortable. We've stayed at the BW at Bandon - called The Inn at Face Rock - and were really surprised. From the outside we weren't sure... it looks kind of "iffy"... but don't judge it by it's exterior. It's a very comfortable place to stay and is also very affordable. There are certainly lots of expensive places to stay as well, but if you're just looking for a place that's good, clean, comfortable... you might check it out. They have an indoor pool with spa and dry sauna there as well which is nice.
A lot of the state parks along the coast have yurts and cabins. We stay in them several times a year and they are very comfortable. We especially love the hot showers and nice sweet trails that most of the campgrounds have which lead you straight to the ocean...

I forgot to mention the fishing.... we saw lots of people parking along the cape arago hwy and walking the trails down to the little beach areas to sit on the rocks and fish. We also saw people crabbing and clamming in different areas. We saw lots and lots of crab when we were there just recently. I don't know what sort of fishing your husband is interested in, but it seems there are some nice spots in that area.

We just spent 2 nights in Brookings area at Harris Beach State Park, and one night in Crescent City at the Curly Redwood Lodge ($75 per night).
Most redwood adventure. But we like the coastal camping.
Your time near Port Orford should be pretty fine.

In case you haven't left yet - Since you're staying in Port Orford, you might want to check out:
1/ Just North of Port Orford on Hwy 101, turn East at Elk River and continue on up that road is an Oregon Fish Hatchery to visit.
2/ Just North of Port Orford (about 9 miles) on Hwy 101, turn West and travel out to the Coastal Edge to see the awesome Cape Blanco Lighthouse. If you're lucky enough to go up inside to the top, check out that awesome Fresnel Lens.
3/ Just North of Port Orford on Hwy 101, pass the Elk River, continue North up Hwy 101 a few miles further to the Sixes River. Turn East on that road and follow the Sixes River miles back (fishing).
Just some addtional things available for you to visit during your stay in Port Orford since you mentioned your husband enjoys fishing. Have fun.
