Default rural living near Corvallis?

Hi,
I am from a different region (texas).
We like to have our chickens and a few goats and a garden
(currently have 5 acres). Our housing is unusually low in that
our 1800 sq ft house with 4.8A cost about 150K, however, this is
a 1978 model with few updates. So, I know that housing is much
higher up there (appears that similar housing is around $220-25K)
however, those are MUCH nicer houses. Assuming that I did move
up there for a job, is my estimate of housing prices for that kind of
housing (1600-1800 sf) be about right? Any advice on where not
to live? A commute up to an hour does not bother me, but less would
obviously be nicer!

I have no idea what housing costs now, but I go back pretty often to visit; you can get that rural living within your commute time south of Corvallis on 99 and surrounding areas-Monroe, Alpine, Bellfountain, Irish Bend, etc.

Philomath used to meet your needs but it's infilling pretty fast since it's so close.

Albany direction, not so much.

I would agree with GeorgiaTransplant as to some of the areas to the south, but there are also opportunites in other directions. Probably the closest possibilities in terms of price you'll find are toward Lebanon...you'd be within your commute time and housing values there are much lower than Corvallis.

Also, heading north along Hwy 99 toward Independence and Rickreal you may also find some opportunities for small acreage in that price range (although its closer to Salem, so a little more expensive).

Southerly, you can also look at Harrisburg, Junction City, Brownsville, Halsey, and Shedd.

Best of luck,

Dave

My brother has lived northwest of Corvallis for a couple of decades. His mailing address is Philomath but he lives in a very tiny community called Kings Valley. It's in the foothills of the Coast Range. I don't know about housing prices. It's only 1/2 hour to Corvallis but you have to watch out for the suicidal deer that will jump in front of your car with no warning.

There is much truth to this.
