Hopefully you will like it, a monthly trip to Costco (PDX) should be adequate to satisfy your 'west side cravings'.

Wasco...
Dryland farming... seasonal activities (work from 5 AM - 10 PM; 6-7 days a week during harvest, ~July 10 - Aug 10) rest of year pretty mellow, tho rains can mess with the schedule and anxiety level.

hot, dry wind (summer)
cold dry wind (winter) (is that why they build wind turbines there???)

rise early, to bed early (when possible)
no traffic (except at grain elevator during harvest)
drive to Biggs Jct or Rufus for people contact, "the Dalles" for stuff like a movie
pretty conservative (could be considered 'redneck', but not to a fault)
good friends to help you when you are down on your luck.

Go with the attitude that you want to be there, integrate and learn from those who have made this home. (as different as it / they may be) leave your "we did it that way" comments and attitude in PDX and enjoy a new culture. You will be accepted quicker, and happier too! Help others, be active in community fund raisers and support. bite your tongue, count to 100 (whatever it takes) just listen, learn and appreciate. After a couple yrs, make the choice to stay, return, or go elsewhere. Give it a fair shake and enjoy a little 'weirdness'.

Bring an old pickup and a beater motorcycle, (and you don't want to stand out) these folks aren't wealthy in material things, but don't discount the warmth of their hearts
