I do love living here on the coast.
I grew up inland Oregon, and always wanted to live at the beach. Hubby and I made the move almost 4yrs ago, and where there have been some things we dont like as much, theres much more we love. I love being able to go for a walk along the beach when im the only one in sight, to watch the storms roll in, the ships go out, the tugs tug by my windows. To hear the sealions barking, and the seagulls scream at each other. I love watching the people go out clamming in the misty mornings, and the crabbers pulling in their hauls. I love the smell of the salty air, and the feel of the ocean breeze. I adore my friends at the local crabshack that know me by name, know w/o me saying a word what my order will be, and how they add a few crab to it just cuz they know me. I love to sit and talk w/them and the local fishermen about the tides, the catch, and their families. I love to be able to point vacationers in the right direction, and tell them about some of our jewels along the coast. I love how our kids are getting a whole different education that isnt offered to those who dont live along the coast. How the scientists from the Marine Biology Department have some of their labs right there at the local schools and the kids are taught right there. The field trips they take over the year to the beaches, tidepools, bayside docks. Personally, i have found many many many more friendly people than I have found rude. From the checkers at the local supermarket, to all the people who stopped and tried to help me when I got a flat tire. From a new neighbor who came and asked my entire family to dinner w/them when we moved in, to the other neighbor who comes to tell us when they have extra room in their garbage can if we need it so we dont have to pay for an extra can. From the lady who runs the local pet rescue who knows me by my kitties name, to the girl in the music shop that gave my daughter a poster she had saved aside for herself, just because my little one asked her and this girl has a wonderful giving heart. Ya, ive run into some rude people, and appearently some posters have had bad experiences w/others here, but I will tell you for me personally, its been about 90%of those I have and continue to meet here, are friendly and helpful. I love how it is more laidback along here. We dont have the roadrage we had up in the Portland area (which wasnt ANYWHERE near as scary and bad as what I experienced in LA!! Yipes) Ya, its cloudy here often, but hey, we have a pretty low rate of skin cancer too. I miss the malls, and some of the resturants, but I also enjoy going to shop where they know me by name, and hold aside things they know I would adore. Or where they know exactly how I like my drink. Again, its a lot about trade offs. Whats important to you, and what you might be willing to compromise/trade off. If your looking for fastpaced excitement, endless clear sunny days for months on end, and living on the edge of whats new and hip, you wont be too happy here. But if you like to slow life down a bit, enjoy long walks along a beautiful beach where youre alone w/your thoughts (or partner hehe) and are willing to look for and see all there is to offer here, you could be very very happy. I am. Best of luck to you, come visit first, and rent before you buy incase its not for you. I hope you find what youre searching for. Tiffany btw, my brother used to live in Prudeo Bay Alaska. He loved the solitude, but says the winters here are much more pleasent. lol |

I recently moved away from Coos Bay and would just like to add something here. Just remember that living in Coos Bay is entirely different than visiting. All the outdoor stuff is nice when the weather is nice. But I'd honestly say that about 80% of the year it is either raining or too windy or foggy or cold to enjoy the Coast. If I had the choice I would have got a job in Eugene and visited Coos Bay or Florence or Newport during the nice weekends.
Coos Bay is more of a retirement community than a booming economy. |

Seashelly, I have tried to find a booking link on the web for that airport without success. Who flies in and out of it?
Is it a 24 hr airport or limited hours regional? Does it have rental car agencies? |

Thank you so much for the nice comment about our store. We also love living in Coos Bay. My wife and myself came to Coos Bay in the mid 70's. We raised our daughter here. My wife worked in the Coos Bay School District for 30 years and we opened Fiddlesticks Gifts in 1881. We feel it is a wonderful community. We often travel away for a short period, but Coos Bay is home. Last edited by fiddlesticks; 12-04-2007 at 12:13 PM.. Reason: mispelling |

You're welcome and Thank You for having your store here!!!! Youve saved my butt on a few bdays/holidays w/stuff like the dragons (which my husband is really into) that nobody else carries! Its one of my kids favorite stores too. I heard a nasty rumor that you were relocating to Eugene. Im hoping thats not so! Im sunk on gifts for a few people if you do that! lol
It IS a good place to raise kids, isnt it? Not hardly any of the negative stuff people kept warning me of has come to pass. And hey, even that storm that really hammered the rest of the Oregon Coastline, we only got a small taste of it. I dont mind the hiking/beach combing, whale watching, etc. during the rainy times. Sure, its beautiful in the summer, but I sure wont turn it down in the winter either! 80% of the time being too cold/windy/wet just isnt true. Unless of course, you have no jacket, melt in water, or are so thin you have to hang onto something when somebody sneezes. Id say turn it around and its more like 80% of the time its pretty nice, and 20% ya might wanna curl up w/a book. Tiffany |
