Smile Rain Lovers of the World Unite!

Thanks to all current residents of Oregon who try to convince potential transplants of the horrible and depressing weather. Coming from some warmer parts of California, I am sure there are plenty of folks who will not be prepared for such a change. As well, we who live more inland in Southern California can share how damn hot it gets here...I mean so hot that you have to stay inside unless you do anything other than soak yourself up in sunscreen and take a dip in a pool.

I was just wondering if it ever occured to anybody that some people love the rain? Yes....there are some folks who look to moving to the North West for cooler weather. Imagine that.

The majority of the world may look at us as fairly odd folks but there some of us who feel a comfort in a rainy day. I almost view it as a covering of protection and a washing away of all the junk in the world.

When it rains people seem to be more cautious, and any inconvienence of the weather reminds us all that there is something out there greater than ourselves. The sound of rain, and the smell of it, and the way if feels when some raindrops get on my face is like nothing else. And "gloomy" weather forces us to be more creative with our indoor time. (Some of the most creative things I have ever done have been on chilly or wet days.)

And has anyone noticed how some some food even tastes better when you cook it on a day when it's pouring outside? Winter barbeques can even be fun. The neigboors think your're crazy but then they smell it, and they are out there grilling the next day. That's what covered decks are for.LOL

Default Love the rain

Thank you for the wonderful post. My wife and I are considering relocating to Eugene from "sunny" Florida. I couldn't agree more with you about the rain, I love the cleansing feeling I get after a rainy day, but do feel cautious about making such a drastic change. I like rain, my wife only tolerates it, so wondering how it's going to affect us. Thanks again!

Default Also love the rain

We are relocating in a few weeks to Corvallis from sunny Hawaii. I was born and raised in Hawaii but I have always loved the rain. Last year we had an unusual amount of constant rain (40 days stright) and I loved it! So many days are just too hot for me here. I know I will miss the beauty of Hawaii, and my family and friends, but Oregon has an extraordinary beauty of its own. We visited at Christmas this past year, and loved the rain, fog, and coolness. I also love the sound of rain on the roof. I know there will be a lot of adjustments, but the people of Oregon seemed so friendly when we visited (even more of the "aloha" spirit than here in Hawaii) and we are looking forward to our new adventure.

Nananie...yes, I did forget that one aspect of damp weather; it can aggrivate athritis. I have TMJ and I know cold weather can cause it to flare up a little. So I will make sure to keep drinking my acai juice (loaded with antioxidants).

I guess mold on window panes is another thing that a homeowner has to deal with.

Interesting you bring up reading a good book. I think I read somewhere that people in Oregon and Washington are some of the most prolific readers in the country. Do forum boards count, too?

As a former Oregonian Id like to weigh in on the rain loving. "Ever had too much of a good thing?" I enjoy the rain here in Texas as it punctuates the weather cycle instead of dominating it. Texas weather is fairly dramatic as well, lots of thunder storms. As far as detering folks from SoCal from relocating to Oregon.. its all yours.

Where I live at the coast we get plenty of rain. I do not mind it. I would rather have rain than snow.
The plants grow fast and everything is green. Summers are mostly dry and sunny.
You get so you adjust your activities to the season.

I love the rain. When I lived in Orange County, I missed it so much. It seemed like it would only rain down there in the middle of the night when I couldn't enjoy it. I missed hearing it hit the roof, I missed a rainy, windy day when I could sit by the fire and read a book or curl up under a blanket and watch my favorite movie.

Granted, you can't do much outside in the rain, but like it was mentioned above, it forces you to be creative inside. I spend lots of time with friends and acquaintances just talking and drinking our ubiquitous coffee. Or hanging it in a brew pub. And there's NOTHING like a storm on the Oregon Coast. It's so breathtaking; you feel like you're witnessing creation from the hand of God Himself.

And when it's sunny like it was today, it's too glorious to conceive. Summers and autumns here are fantastic. Everything is green year round and the flowers and buds come out. Right now my back yard is awash in oranges, blues, violets, yellows, whites, reds and burgundies--plus the lush green everywhere.
