Default I need a questioned answered from u lovely Oregon people

Hi,
I was offered a job interview in Roseburg Oregon. I really wanted this other job that is in Portland, but beggers can't be choosers, right?..... Personally I don't care if I am dropped off in a tree in Oregon just as long as I am in Oregon some where.
Anyhow, my question is, how far is Roseberg from Portland as far minutes and or miles?
Please respond as soon as you can, I have to figure alot of things out and make a bunch of arrangements.
Thank you all you're the best

Oh also, do you have any ideas how I can make this trip as cost effective and "smart" as possible. I live in california.

Oregongolf.com - Oregon Mileage Table

A mileage chart. It's straight I-5 all the way. Pretty easy drive. Maybe three hours from Roseburg to PDX.

Not sure about the cost-effective part of your questions. Are you driving or flying, and from which city in California? I usually bring food with me and stop only to exercise a bit. That cuts out quite an expense when you travel.

Three hours between Portland and Roseburg is about right.

The drive from Roseburg to Portland is -
"177 mi – about 2 hours 51 mins" According to Google maps. It's a relatively easy drive and frankly can be done closer to 2.25-2.5 hours if you are trying.

Eugene is less than an hour north of Roseburg. It has two large shopping centers and an active performing arts scene.

Watch out for the State Police particularly from Albany south to Cottage Grove. Don't crowd the speed limit more than about 5 mph. near urban areas of the State in general. I think OSP particularly patrols that section because of the number of college age drivers who attend Oregon State and U of O. Odds are OSP has had to scrape too many off the road over the years.

Thank you all for your help.
Could you tell me what it is like? Is there much crime? Are most places walkable? Are the office type buildings close to places to live, ie: apartment buildings?
Thanx

Roseburg isn't very walkable, but it is small so I suppose that counts for something. It is, by and large, a very safe little city. It'd probably be most practical to ride a bike rather than to walk. I'm not experienced enough to say how bike- or pedestrian-friendly people are there though. Things are spread out, but again, it's a small town.

Also, regarding the state police speed traps... I've seen them all over I-5. I got caught by one near Cottage Grove. Seen them outside of Roseburg, Sutherlin, Salem, Eugene, Wolf Creek, Gold Hill, Central Point... Anything over 7 MPH over is likely to get you pulled over.

In response to the first part of your question, Roseburg is in Oregon and hardly a tree in the middle of nowhere! It's a beautiful little community, and I would say that if you have a job prospect in Oregon right now, and you are determined to move somewhere in OR, go for it! After all, even if you decide that Roseburg isn't for you in the long run, at least you'll have moved to OR and have employment to save for your move to PDX eventually.

Like others have said, cost effective and smart as possible, in terms of travel from CA depends on where you're traveling from. Without that information, we can't really give you much advice.

Here's the deal w the burg

There is a real dichotomy between the politcal left and right that erupts in chambers of commerce business folks and biblethumpers vs union folks and lib dems, like that's any different from anyplace else? But in the burg, the bible and chamber folks clearly have the advantage, and they are rabid...check out nrtoday.com and read the forum letters. In fact, they are plain nuts with all the jesus, flaggot, and anti government paranoia BS.

If you have teens and you are moving from so cal, be ready for HUGE therapy bills or they will hate you for moving them there....and spend all your money on alcohol when the rains hit and they can't conform....not mention shopping excursions to VRC in Eugene or Washington Square in PDX, unless of course you're moving from Orange county....by all means.....unless you're moving there from Orange county.....

Eugene will save you, but you need to make roots asap, preferably before winter sets in....if you miss out, there is the Holiday Market during december...then the long stretch till summer...

Music on the Half Shell concerts at Stewart Park will be vital to your social existence and mental well being from the kids during the summer, (don't worry, you will see them again in fall, or when the Douglas County Sheriff's Dept calls, whichever comes first....

Shirley, I jest...but the fact is teens don't have a lot to do there, and routinely escape to college town grooves north in the will valley, where they "come from all parts".

Smaller kids are an exception, they always are

If you have all kids, please remove all references to kids, but the same social rules might apply to your inner child. To be sure, Roseburg is quaint, small, and very friendly....Almost everybody down there goes to great lengths to be polite, no "road rage" there....they save that for the forum section of the local news rag....and everyone, I may be wrong here, genuinely looks out for others....

One thing that is curious about the place is the rapid turnover in marriages....mainly because many of the locals never really get out to explore life and get married instead....as a result, there is an almost insane obsession with gossip, fashion, and anything wedding related....

Hunting, fishing, and sports also dominate all conversations...it used to be the housing industry but that went bust and is still trying to recover....The outdoors are absolutely superb, there is nothing you will ever experience like jumping off basalt rocks into Little River on a summer day...they can't make that and sell it at a mall...

I'm going off on a limb here, but I suspect you are being hired as an administrator for the government or a hospital, those are two of the most stable employers in Roseburg. Whatever you do, make sure you have SOLID employment before you move there....it is not the place to be with a pink slip in your hand right now.

As far as moving there, load up a u haul if you got stuff you simply can't live without, don't worry about finding a place, it is a real buyers/renters market.

good luck!
