Default Joseph, Oregon?

Hi Oregon,
I'm just stopping by to ask about Joseph, Oregon.
It's not a relocation question but i've just always been very curious about it for some reason.
I've been thinking about doing some road traveling this fall and may head up there.
Anyone from Joseph that could share info about it?
Thank you.

For several years it's been in the process of kind of becoming an artistic community...a number of sculptors, artistic foundry-type/art gallery places there.
Gorgeous countryside...has a history strongly linked to outdoor recreation (Red's Horse Ranch, etc.)...even attracted some Hollywood types once upon a time years ago.

Small town, friendly people--still small-town conservative.

It's a small eastern Oregon town just like all the other small eastern Oregon towns. It relies a bit more on tourism then some due to it's location near the Wallowas. Too dry (for my taste) in the summer, and too snowy in the winter.

Are you going camping or hiking in the area?

Very cool area ... Eagle Cap Wilderness area is right there ... Wallowa Lake.

Then, since you will be road tripping, you absolutley must take Rattlesnake Grade north up into Washington. Some of the best twisties you will find anywhere. The road is a total blast to drive.

If you are coming up I-84, take highway 86 through Halfway to Oxbow. Take a side trip through the canyon to Hells Canyon dam.

Then take highway 39 to Joseph stopping at the Hells Canyon overlook.

Infested with rattlesnakes. Better bring stilts to walk on or you could end up dying in the local hospital swelled up to 3 times your normal size. Enjoy.

There are only about 50 poisonous snakebites per year in the entire state of Oregon, so they are quite rare. You don't have to bring stilts, just don't put one in your mouth:

I was just there. It's a beautiful area and the people are very friendly. It's definately an Oregon "must see" area. Lots to do right around the lake.

Last Wed. in Joseph it was in the 30's in the morning and I had frost on my windshield. Now here in Portland it's in the 90's.

Nice place to spend a few days but I can't imagine living there unless it's on the family farm.
