Default Hermiston questions

We're thinking of moving from Bend to Hermiston for a job & have some questions. We love Bend very much but we have to make a living. I understand it's possible to work in Hermiston & commute from areas that might be a little nicer (no offense to the good people of Hermiston). What places might be within reach in terms of a commute? Are the "Tri-Cities" in Washington nice? How about Pendleton? Any place with trees, etc.? Does tough winter weather make commuting tough?
