John Day Area
I enjoyed our visit to the John Day area this summer. The Painted Hills near Mitchell are not to be missed. Awesome colors on the landscape & well deserving of its National Monument status. The drive along the John Day River on Hwy. 26 is great, and there is some nice mountain scenery in the Dayville and Mount Vernon areas. Did not get as far as Prairie City, only to John Day and Canyon City, but the Strawberry Mountains reach over 9000 feet, rising over 5500 feet from the river valley. This area is remote, three plus hours to Boise, the nearest airport of much size, but would be an area to consider for small town living.

Great photos, thanks....makes me miss home.
If you get a chance, hike into the Strawberry Wilderness...for a "pocket" wilderness, it has some amazing diversity and gorgeous country.

The painted desert is beautiful, also if you plan to go to Oregon again, try heading east north to Joseph, beautiful.
There is a huge flea market in Sumpter, Memorial day weekend, maybe the 4th of july weekend and Labor day, its goes on for 3 days, Sumpter is a very small town, but nothing is small about it during the flea market.

The John Day area is really nice, if you do get to Prairie City there is a small cafe in the middle of town, can't remember the name, but it serves some of the best sandwiches you'll ever have.
There is allot to see in the area, John Day Fossil Beds is just one of many sites, continue east on 26 to hwy 7 it takes you through the Blue Mts, great drive. Sumpter is one of those small towns in eastern Oregon that is a must see, like the above post said, the flea market is one of the largest in eastern Oregon.

Oh my gosh yes - DEFINITELY go to the flea market in Sumpter. Seriously, the town metamorphosizes into something magical! To call it simply a "flea market" never did it justice in my opinion. It is quite the event!! Fun fun fun in absolutely stunning and historical evirons.

Do they still do the sled dog races at Sumpter? We used to enjoy those.
Love the John Day area...

On a road trip about 4 years ago (the one that convinced me I wanted to live in Oregon), I took the John Day Hwy out of the state. I was expecting miles of nothing and I was so surprised by the gorgeous colors! It turned out to be one of my favorite driving stretches during the entire trip from MN and back. My parents rode the motorcycle out a couple weeks ago to visit and I got them to take that drive. They loved it as well.
