Cascade Locks has much more rain and wind than HR, The gorge gets really narrow there, and the wind has to gain significant speed from there west to Crown Point, starts slowing at Troutdale (wider)

The dry weather starts about 10 miles east of Cascade Locks, just before HR. Gets really dry (ticks / rattlesnakes) by the time you get to The Dalles / Rowena

Try Dufur (only 20 min to The Dalles) or Tygh Valley.

Goldendale, WA is a popular retiree spot (I'm waiting till they get a cover on their new pool). But I was hoping to move from the Gorge to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho or Tekoh, WA. Maybe we should swap digs!
my grandparents lived in Wishram in the 60's til the late 70's, gramps worked for the railroad. Loved the view from there, but can't remember much except we had to go to Goldendale to shop for anything. Such a small town doesn't sound so bad now.

Like Larry's suggestion of Klamath Falls, maybe see what that's like at some point. But, I do believe it's hard to find a place that is not being over developed, but we sure are going to try.

my neck is really red right now, I have been putting in irrigation, and landscaping. Got a problem with that?
Your new here, you may want to tone down the namecalling. Some may take offense.

Roseburg has the mildest weather in the state of Oregon. 20,000 people or so, and everybody knows everybody.

We love the Gorge area and especially like Hood River, but homes are a bit too expensive for our budget. Can anyone suggest some places to explore that would give a small town feel and a low key pace of life? I appreciate any input provided.
In Hermiston, it is HOT in summer, cold in winter{but winter is shorter, tho not short enough}, less then 16,000 people, on the OR/WA border, and the Columbia River.

I live in Independence, Small but friendly. I DO escape in the winter to AZ but my nearly 80 yr old bones can't take the rain and cold. You are close to Salem, Portland and skiing if you like the winter sports. Just got back from a week at the Coast. Wonderful and ony about an hour away. Hope you come to our great area.

One thing that City-Data left out of their Roseburg page is that there is a regional VA Hospital in Roseburg. It's a big draw for the retired veteran community. Retirement is the biggest industry in Roseburg.

I am not familiar with Oregon that much. I have not heard of Gold Beach. Where is it? We are looking to retire soon and am interested in a smallish town, low cost of living, and reasonable housing. Also looking for a small town that is within easy driving distance to major medical facilities as me and my wife both require medical.
