Roseburg, Yoncalla, Drain, etc.
Well, this came pretty quickly. My wife was given a position in Roseburg and she starts in a few weeks. We are going to be renting a place at Oakridge and hopefully buy a house within the next 2 months after I find a job (fingers intensely crossed.)
I'm leaning towards living in Drain because the educational rating is higher than in Roseburg according to schooldatadirect. Any ideas?
Also, are there any "bad" parts of town, or areas to shy away from in any of those three cities?
Thanks!

Uh.... there is no bad or good part of Drain. It's a small city owned mostly by one family. I don't even remember if it has a real grocery store any more. Yoncalla is much the same. Both do have a slightly better education system, but that's because they have more money per a child then bigger cities do.
Roseburg is your "big" city there, the worse you have is some red neck teenagers with big pickup trucks who think they're cool.

That must have been a typo. Surely you meant to say "the next 2 years," didn't you?

Good luck on the job hunt. I would be interested in hearing how it goes. I visited Roseburg a few weeks ago and was told they have 18% unemployment so I was rethinking a move there.

drain does still have a grocery store. and a couple of eateries, a gas station, a coffee place, a way overpriced rather frightening store thats supposed to be like a fleamarket/used stuff store (although its got some interesting stuff...uh...crammed in) I drive through it fairly frequently, my grandma lived there til she passed on a few years ago. Not a whole lot there, but Cottage Grove is close, and its very pretty in/around Drain IMO.
good luck

I have been in Drain when the traffic jam was from moving cows through town on horseback! It is small!

Have you moved and are you all nestled in for the winter?

Not yet. My wife is moving next monday and is going to be staying in Roseburg at a furnished apartment. Her is being shipped in 3 days. I won't be moving until either our house sells or I get a job first. I have an interview on the 16th so I hope that goes well. We're probably going to plan on living in Oakland because of the school system.
...And yes, 2 months if i get a job.

good for you, LeChevalierNoir! I hope you find success! I like Oakland. It is small and a very sedate community. As far as jobs, they are pretty scarce, but you can always secure a job for now and then find the one you really want later when the economy picks up. In the meantime, stay warm and enjoy the holiday spirit in that little town of Oakland. It becomes picture perfect during the Christmas season and many come to see the little town all dolled up!

Update!
I was in Roseburg over the weekend. WOW!
My wife has been working there for over a week now and she loves it. I also got a verbal on a contract position at an interview I was invited to while I was in town. I'm currently waiting on the paperwork. Ideally, I would like to sell our home and have another house lined up before moving, but I guess we just have to be patient.
Speaking of houses, we found 2 that we really liked in Winston. That's probably where we're going to buy one. Good neighborhood, views, and the quality of the property look good too. However...the driveways!!! My goodness! That's the only issue I had. I'd hate to give up my rwd but I can foresee having issues pulling into the garage if we get a tiny bit of snow or even ice.
Pluses all the way from me. I can't wait.
