Yeah, there's not much going on in Waldport. No jobs, nothing to do, bad schools. Most people commute to Newport for work and to buy groceries.

I lived in Waldport, Tidewater, Newport areas for 10 years. I heard that Waldport is cursed by the Alsea Indians. The whole Waldport area along the bay was a tribal burial ground. I know this first hand; while working for a utility company, whenever digging was going on, a government sanctioned archeologist had to be present. She would record all sorts of data about location of digging, soil/sand conditions, and anything else relevant. This came about years ago when a property owner was rebuilding a home site, and started digging up human bones, and Indian artifacts. (on the west side of hwy101 in town)
For the 10 years I was in the area, I always thought Waldport was "up and coming", but it just never seems to go anywhere. It seems "stuck in a rut" sorta speak. I have been back on the Central Coast for work over the past 6 months, and nothing has changed with Waldport. Its a shame, being it is an extremely beautiful area. The bay is extraordinarily clean with no mills, or industries along the Alsea river to feed waste into it. The clams, mussels and crabs out of that bay are incredibly tasty.
On a side note:
Also, in Newport, yesterday I counted 18 empty storefronts, and/or actual buildings from the "art deco" area (hwy101 & SW Alder st) to hwy101 and NW 20th street. That's about a 25 block stretch and a lot of empty space. Some business' have been established for 20+ years are going away, or downsizing. The Lincoln County school district lost 6 million dollars over the next 3 years. That's a hard hit for the school kids, in a school district that is already underfunded.
I am really saddened by the current affairs happening along the central coast. I don't know whats going on in Lincoln City, as I don't get up there often, and I don't know anyone there to fill me in on the happenings.

My only advise for anyone looking to move to the Central Oregon Coast. Bring money. Establish a needed business, and don't expect to live off of it. Don't build a McMansion. Rebuild an existing home internally. Of course be nice to the locals, don't gloat.
And change your plates ASAP!

That's sad about Waldport. I always thought that its problem (or blessing) was that is was a tad too far from the main cities. Unfortunately, the sad state of businesses is not only at the coast. It is happening everywhere. I haven't heard much about how Lincoln City is being impacted. I know of one restaurant closing this week though. I also heard that the casino has cut back on staff. Lincoln City may survive because it still seems to have enough valley folk come over, if even for a day. People still have to get their beach fix.

I live just north of Lincoln City. Businesses here are crying the blues, like everywhere, I guess.

I've lived here for a long time and agree that it is hard to make friends with neighbors and coworkers. Especially if you are from California! Mainly because a lot of transplants move here and only last 12 - 18 months. Once you prove that you can handle it here, and that you'll stick around, people will warm up.

Tip: Don't move here and complain about the weather or complain about there being nothing to do. Nobody will feel sorry for you. However complaining about the traffic is socially acceptable and locals will join in and give you high fives.

My wife and I will be retiring and building a home in Waldport, Oregon in one month. Between 1980- 1997 we lived in Central Oregon and visited Waldport every summer. Years ago when I was a teacher I was a general contractor and plan to be my own general for this house and also a home that my two sons want me to build for them. Does anyone know "excellent " subs contractors that I might talk to about the possibility of bidding on these two jobs? I can be reached directly at : WLindemann@comast.net Bill

Thank you all, for being so up beat and positive about your special area of the Oregon Coast. As a former Oregonian myself, we look forward to returning home. My husband is a former Californian/Oregonian...LOL he loves the Oregon Coast as much as we do. Its been 9 years since we have been gone. Opportunity knocked and we opened the door. We look forward and have missed the rainy windy days, the foggy misty days. There was a coffee shop long ago at the end of Bay Blvd in Newport that we would always stop at once done with our morning walk, they had the best scones and coffee there. Mmmmmm looking forward to that again.
This time around though we are looking to start up a small furniture business, something that we do now for a little side job. Of course we will be looking for something part time, not looking for a company job.....Right now we are live on site managers for a resort in Florida. Its been a 24/7 job, with very little time for ourselves. We are up in age and really are just semi retiring I guess. So really a part time job will be just what the doctor ordered......no stress, no mess, no fuss.....perfect.
It has been a great pleasure to read all the post from people who love this coast line. We look forward to getting home....Thank you again.
