A word about the storms, They can be quite severe and last fall/winter they were horrendous, we lost power more often than it was on. Generally after the storm is over we like to check on neighbors, neighbors don't really give a damn about one another. I grew up in an ethnic neighborhood on the East Coast, so I'm used to the closeness, you won't find that here. In my opinion, locals tend to be a bit xenophobic toward out-of-staters. My wife and I have decided to sell and move back East. I hope you like the dreary weather and the depressing attitudes that go along with it. I'm sorry to be so blunt, but you need to hear it from someone not from the Oregon Coast. BTW, I filled some potholes in my street, for the benefit of the neighborhood and not one neighbor has stopped to say thank you, proves my point convincingly.

It's true about finding a place with dogs. It really doesn't make sense especially if you read the ad. For example, you'll see ads that say "large fenced yard. No Pets."
I met a couple people from San Diego or are fans of San Diego sports teams (Chargers/Padres) along the Oregon Coast which I've found very friendly. The locals however are mixed. They seem nice when you talk to them but the overall feeling you get is they're more stuck up than Californians, atleast that's the way I feel and not just along the Oregon Coast.
Yes, the storms are crazy. Hurricane force winds, driving rain, flooding, power outages, property damage. To me, originally being from San Diego also, it was like experiencing snow for the first time.

To be honest I tend to be more of a keep to myself kind of guy. I'm friendly and helpful if people want it, but due to the nature of my business, I am kept very busy and don't have a lot of time for others aside from my dog.
The only thing that is a concern for me at the moment is finding a place that will accept my pet and getting more information about power outages because my other thread about that very issue came back with some different feedback.
I think everyone agrees that the winds are very strong, especially during the winter months, but I am curious how often the power goes out for extended periods of time at different locations on the coast. I wish that was part of the city-data.

While I was living on the coast, power outages in my area were rare. Maybe once or twice it went out (in the 8 months I was there) and came back on within an hour or so. Now that I live east of the cascades, our power has gone out 2-3 times in a 1 month span and lasted for hours. Power companies along the coast (or atleast in the town I was in) seem to get things back on track perhaps because they're used to it.

we lost power for about an hour or so during the worst storm of last winter...there were some trees down, but here at our house, the worst damage was the neighbors unanchored and empty garbage can hitting the side of our house and into our bushes. I dearly love a good storm, and have to say, ive been pretty dang disappointed at the ones along here. sigh. And nope, im not inland at all, If i could throw a little better, I could hit the beach w/a rock from my front porch. my husband CAN toss and hit it. We've got some pretty extensive fish tanks, w/very spoiled and sensative fish in them, and hubby was worried about power outages and the affect itd have on his fish, but not a prob.
As for pets, we have 2 dogs, 2 cats, lots of fish, and a bird. While it was challenging to find a place that would accept all of them, we've done it. First time we went through a property management and told em up front what we had for pets and they helped find us our first rental, then, second time, we delt directly w/the owner of the house. No probs. You should be ready and willing to shell out some extra though for pet deposit.
Best of luck to you!!

rgates2000,
I have read you post and find it thoughtfull. You really seem to be everything that the Oregon Coast exemplifies. I was born and raised in Oregon and lived on the Oregon Coast for many years. I relocated just to see the world and miss the rainy windy weather of the pacific everyday. You will find that Oregonians are not snobbish or rude, they are who they are. Oregonians do not worry about what the Jones's are doing next door or what the last bit of gossip was about, there is to much for them to do and go and see. As far as walking on the beach you are doing the one thing that I enjoyed the most. Be happy and enjoy your life on the Oregon Coast from the one person in the world that is very jealous of you already.

I was told people in Hawaii were standoffish but found that if I treated them with respect they would be respectful of me. It is called attitude. One woman told me that most mainlanders come with an attitude that they are better than the people in Hawaii. I even hate it here in Florida when what we call snowbirds come with attitudes of "We don't it that way back home". It is all in the attitude as to how you will be treated. Besides if you two are so unhappy move elsewhere to a place where you will be happy.

As I said before and I will repeat it again, I am very approachable and I am also very respectful of other people and their feelings. I was taught by my parents from a very young age that "You treat people as you expect to be treated" & that are consequences to my words & actions. I also didn't come to this state with a previous attitude. I love the USA and feel more patriotic towards this country than my own. I have been welcomed with open arms to the point of me wanting Citizenship. I also never said "all people", I did say however "People are for the most part just plain rude" and that "You will find some genuinely nice people, but they are far and few between".There have been a few people I have come across that were nice and friendly. Your response leads me to believe that you are exactly the kind of people I was referring to. I was giving my experience, if yours is different then great but this happens to be my experience. I don't appreciate someone telling me to move. That isn't very friendly is it? I understand that people are unfriendly all over the world and I have traveled all over the world, I just haven't seen unfriendliness in such a large scale before. If you are going to move from Florida to the Oregon Coast would you mind awfully leaving your disrepect of me behind. Thankyou

As for the power outages.......a few years ago power was out for 6 days and that was including a neighbour working for the power company, even he couldn't speed up the process of getting power to my neighbourhood.
This winter the worse was 4 1/2 days without power.
November was the worse month with untold flooding. We also had snow on the ground at our house for a little under a week. It has been a very strange winter but nowhere near as bad as the winter before (IMHO) I'm talking about the amount of rain last winter versus this winter that has just passed, we didn't have as many full days of rain and even got sunshine for 2 weeks in Jan which was a blessing because it broke up the winter a bit.

Where do you live britgirl? I think it might be an area to avoid. Simply because of the weather, you seem perfectly nice to me.

The weather can be somewhat different depending on your location on the coast. I am located in the Bay area of Coos Bay/North Bend. I don't find the weather to be much of a problem. Yes the power went out for a while one day last winter.
Since I've lived here for almost 4 years there has not been much of any snow. We had some sleet a few times but it didn't last long.
I find most of the people here are quite friendly and not stuck up at all. When I go to a store even the clerks are chatty. I have lived elsewhere in Oregon and I've found the people here to be much more friendly than most other places.
Now I don't know about living in the north coast. Sure I have been there but I didn't live there. If you live in a small isolated town just about anywhere it can be difficult to fit in. It is all run by the local yokels.

Britgirl I didn't mean it to come out as disrespectful. I shouldn't try to post anything when I have a bad headache. Life is too short to live where you aren't happy that is why I want to leave Florida. The people are great but the weather and now the fires are too much.
