Corvalllis sounds like a good fit for you. It can be pretty expensive on the housing. It fits your population size, has a wonderful farmer's market last I knew and has tons of hiking and camping nearby.

Wonderful, I left LA because I was tired of the attitude from people who thought they were better than others just because they had money. I had added Oregon as a place I might want to live in especially in one of the smaller coastal towns. But not, if the state has become another version of Southern California. I hope this isn't true. There are enough McMansions in the US without ruining another state with more.
I don't remember the poster but I loved their comment about leaving the elitist attitude at the state line. Being a little humble goes a long way of fitting in with a new community.

That was me again.
Yes, being humble does go a long way. Oregon has changed a lot over the years like so many places. But, not knowing California very well, it is probably still decent compared to there. There are still little towns here and there that are quiet and pleasant. There are still some special corners left. One thing Oregon has had going for it was the strict land use laws. In Montana those haven't existed and developers have taken advantage of that. There is a lot that goes into building in Oregon and it slows people down in their building desires.

Coos Bay Or. is a great town, and surprisingly alot of californians move to the west coast of Oregon, we did.

I was sort of stunned that a simple fix like buying a generator seemed to be so overlooked.
It's a very good idea anyplace with inclement weather... as seems rather obvious.

WOW, some very passionate individuals on this site!....I'm new and enjoy browsing this forum. I'm jumping in w/ questions because I don't know how this works....My husband and I are looking for a second home and LOVE the oregon coast. We looked at the entire washington coast as well just this last month (just to compare to make sure we make the right choice) and in my opinion it didn't hold a candle to your coast! We looked at southern oregon to start (about two years ago) Brookings area and up to Gold Beach. Liked the scenery but seemed a bit remote in many aspects. We visited northern oregon last October, LOVED Cannon Beach but a little out of our price range (we're not as fond of the other areas surrounding CB w/ the exception of Manzanita)....We will be traveling to newport and surrounding coastal areas in December.
Liked Cannon Beach because it was charming with the art studios and pubs. Super friendly, happy people, close enough to a big city (portland).
FYI....We are a married couple 39yrs/42yrs no kids...our dogs are our children (hope I don't get crap for that)....I am an artist, my husband owns a successful beach bar & grill we have had for 12 years...so employment opportunities are not essential. Yes, we are from california....but we are humble and don't blame you for being sick and tired of the equity rich californians moving in and grossly showcasing their wealth. We do want to live on your coast however, because we would rather pay a quarter million than 2 million and have the luxury of not looking into your neighbors bathroom!
Also...weather is not a factor....we LOVE your storms, rain and everything in between!!
Would love input!
Fondly,
Nicolette

lol, id love to help you out...but not really sure what input youre looking for.
Personally, I just dont think you can really go wrong w/the Oregon Coast. I love it all!! Have you looked into Yachats? Or Depoe Bay? both are beautiful w/some really neat houses...Lincoln City might be up your alley, its got a lot to offer. I live in Coos Bay and love it, but would be quite happy in pretty much any of the towns/cities along the coast. With the exception maybe of Seaside. I love it for a short time, but boy, that crowd during spring break and much of summer, that might annoy me. I still wouldnt turn away any house anyone tried to leave me there though! lol
Have you looked into Coos Bay? theres a couple really nice homes w/ocean front, or ocean view up for sale...wwaaayyy to far out of MY price range!! But hey, if you can swing it, why not swing a dream?
Best of luck,
Tiffany

hi tiffany,
Thanks for the input!
We will definitely check out Coos Bay. We are looking for acreage close to the ocean...5+ acres so we can build a small cabin and have horses (is that possible)?? Under $300K?? I'm probably being too unrealistic....
most important to us is land, land, land!! Beautiful trees, close to the water (within 10 miles)...room to run around...not be on top of your neighbors with all due respect. Be able to have a good local pub or wine bar close...etc....
Hey...we don't want much huh??

hummmmm I dont know much about Otis...Florence is nice, but has gotten rather expensive in the last few years. I dont think youd find much in regards to land under 300thous. Honestly, that stretch mind find you spending a bit more than 300th. for what you want. Id call a local realtor if i were you and have em send you some booklets w/the houses/land available for the areas you want. Might give you a better jumping point.
