Looking to move...
to the OR coast, Yachats in particular. We've already found a house, just need some questions answered before we put in a bid.
Any words of advice? TIA ~

rain gear....
lol, nah, its a very very nice little town, has some beautiful scenery....not too far from Lincoln City, couple cute little shops, some beautiful homes, can get clogged in the summer due to tourists along 101, you'll be right down the road from Devils Churn which is one of my fav. stops along the coast...people can be very sensitive (understandably!!!) because a notorious child/wife killed lived there..christian longo. horrible sad story. its been a few years, but I know reporters and morbid curious seekers really decended on the townfolk for awhile there....But, the people ive met there, (and a friend who lived there previously) are pretty friendly. lot of solitary beachcombers, and not a lot of kids in that town. they do seem to hold a lot of community events (ie community sales, farmers market, animal fundraising) there and they seem to be fairly popular w/the people there. Id love to retire there someday. Very very pretty.

True.

Well, it's not THAT far, but it's almost 50 miles, and it takes over an hour most of the time. Waldport is much closer, about nine miles, followed by Newport, which is about 25 miles and a half-hour away.

Aside from the fact that he lived in Newport, and not Yachats, and aside from the fact that the case was several years ago, and aside from the fact that it never really comes up anymore...
Quite nice. It's next to Cape Perpetua, which makes for a nice, short hike. Longer hikes are available in the surrounding forest.

Good point. Yachats is full of retirees, and they tend to have money.

actually, he did live there for awhile, he rented a condo from the little real estate place there in town, before they moved to Walport, then onto Newport. And yes, i know they were living in Newport when he killed them, but there are those who still seek out every place they were, even if it was a short time. Yachats was also the place they ended the run from east. And my friend who lived there was saying this last summer, when she was still living there, that there were a few people that were in the resturant on their way through town and brought it up, also some people that she ran into at the tidepools there. I'll let her know she was wrong.
I am sorry though about mixing up lincoln city and newport. i was wrong.

Thanks, Tiffela! We were just there looking at the place in Yachats; we're going back next week to have T-day with my sister, and look at a place in Waldport.
I think ones own attitude has a lot to do with others' reaction to you. While we were there, we talked to several locals who were very nice, and encouraged us to move there.

how terrific for ya Duncansmom!! You're be here in the start of stormy season too, so you'll get a chance to see what wintertime is like along our coastline. bring raingear! You may very well need it. Oh, and might want to keep back from the water, the sneaker waves are always ready, and more so in the fall/winter.
Does your sister live along the coast? Its always nice to have someone else you know already here. Im so happy you got a good reception while you were talking to the locals. Sounds like you'd start out with some friends!
Youre so right, its so much about your own attitiude on what you'll get back. Ive rarely had anyone be rude, much less cruel to me when ive been out and about. Give a smile, get a smile.
You'll have to let us know what you think of late Nov. along the coast! Im eager to hear how your lookabout Waldport goes!

I am moving to the Oregon coast from San Diego in a few weeks. I lived in the Seattle area up until about 6 months ago and I miss the rain. I know some people will think I'm strange for wanting to move from San Diego to the Oregon Coast, but it is a perfect fit for me.
I am self-employed (I do radio and television commercials), and I like a slower lifestyle. I don't really need a nightlife and being that close to the ocean where I can take my dog for walks is going to be great. I am also a sucker for a good winter storm and I hear the Oregon coast has some impressive ones.
The issue I've been running into so far is trying to find a place that allows pets. If anyone has any good leads on rentals that would be great. I check craigslist but there aren't as many postings as I'm sure there are places. I am looking primarily along the central coast from Lincoln City down to Florence.
Thanks in Advance,
Rich

found it!!!
We're just back from the coast... we found the PERFECT house (in Waldport). We put an offer in late Wed. afternoon, and it was accepted first thing Fri. AM!!! So as soon as we can sell the place here... Fortunately, Yakima (aka Yuck-burg!) has one of the best markets in the country right now!
Everyone we've met on the coast has been very friendly and kind ~ so no worries there...

Good luck on your new home duncansmom. I have been to Waldport and found it a good place to be. Then I like just about everywhere on the coast. it's all just so pretty here by the ocean.

Tiffany ~
My sister lives in Milwaukie (OR), but has been going to the Newport area for over 15 years. And having lived on the coast before, I'm very familiar with sneaker waves, but thanks for the heads up!
Is there some way I could contact you in a bit more private setting? I'm not sure what the etiquette for this might be in this forum...
Thanks for your kind words...
