Hi Folks, I'm from Northern Vt. And am looking into moving to Costal Oragon. Given The weather here, At times -20 to less. 0 on a regular basis in the long winters. Seemed like a reasonable option. Not a great fan of Grey Skys, but being on the Ocean again sounds like a good trade to me. Was raised on the ocean, and had captained and lived on my own boat in Fla. for some years. I'm 58, and my gfirlfried is 52. We are both retired, for the most part. I worked in Mental Health for most of my working life. Can you recomend a nice quiet smaller town along the coast. A writer now, and not very active socially. More into prrivacy, but do enjoe small town social mixing to a degree. I have been looking for rentals without much luck... Suggestions?

The Oregon Coast is absolutely beautiful, but you have to STRONGLY consider whether it is right for you because the single biggest constant after its beauty is its grey skies for much of the year. If being on the ocean again is what you seek, there are a LOT of places that would fit the bill, plus give you more sun.
I think people who live in, say, Portland know what to expect from the coastal weather. For someone coming across country and apprehensive about grey days, such as yourself, I strongly recommend that you book a week's vacation on the coast this winter and see how you do. The Oregon coast is a beautiful place, but for owning a home and living there year round, it is not for everyone.

thanks Waterlily, she got the message to me.
What a terrific late Thanksgiving/early Christmas gift! To have your offer accepted in the town you want to live in! Awesome.
New to Oragon...Im not sure if its a typo, a clever lettering, or a mistake, but you do know Oregon is spelled w/an E, not an A, right?
anyhows, which coast did you grow up on? Ive never been to Florida, but from what I hear, our coasts are quite different. For one, we dont get hurricaines! We do get more grey skies than many parts of the world, but its not so bad. My kids spent all weekend outside riding their bikes under a bright blue sky, and not a raindrop in sight. And its been beautiful for months and months now. Ya, we've had a few days of rain, but not many, and its almost December, so dont buy into the "9months of gray weeping skies" crap. Id expect the next few months to have the darker skies roll in and set up camp, but then again, when i first moved here, I expected them in October, then November, lol. Dont get me wrong, its NOT all sunshine and blue here 99.9% of the time, but its sure not the dark and depressing constant that some people think.....And as for a trade off, my husband likes lots of hot hot hot days (like 100degrees plus) , we dont get those here. Im happy for that! lol But for him, the lack of huge storms, freezing rain, banks of snow, and weather like that is a happy trade off.
From what it sounds like youre looking for, there should be several places along the coast that would fit your needs. Just how small are you looking to? Any MUST HAVEs store wise? House/Aprt/Duplex? Pets?
Id love to be able to help you out....the Oregon Coast is a terrific place to live. At least for most of us! Make sure you come visit first and make sure its gonna be a good move!
best of luck!
Tiffany

The temperature will be more agreeable for you, the big problem for me with years of vacationing at the coast and growing up in the astoria area is the volume of traffic during the tourist season, rentals are in short supply I think due to the fact more people are living there full time and the homes have increased dramatically causing more locals to have to rent, and there to be more rental shortage. You may be suprised at the number of people living there now. good luck

Hi, Tiffany ~ I think my SPAM blocker is a bit too effective with you... please use bghrnccrn@charter.net...
I'm not sure when we'll next be down there... our house here is on the market, but with the holidays coming up, it might be slow going for a while...
How far from Newport to Coos Bay? (how long?)
I am SOOOOOO excited about getting back to my beloved coast!

friend You'll never win anyone over with that smart cali attitude...people here are not taken with folks who have money, it isn't what you possess but whats possessing you, you might want to tone it down a notch or two, be real and you might find a friend for life! Good Luck!
