Also, if you do buy an elk tag in Oregon, you'll definitely want to be a state resident (as shown through a driver's license, for example) instead of a nonresident. An elk tag for residents is $34.50; for nonresidents, it is $361.50. To be honest, I have mainly done deer hunting, and don't have a great wealth of experience hunting elk, but your hunting location really depends on your preference for Roosevelt elk, or Rocky Mountain Elk.

Roosevelt elk are generally located on the west side of the Cascade mountains, while the Rocky Mountain elk are on the other side. The Roosevelt bulls can weigh up to 1,000lbs, so... if you harvest one, you'll need some serious gear to do the field dressing and transportation back to your vehicle.

Yep, DH and I are rather liberal too, college educated, etc.. I must say that once you get a taste of elk, it's hard to eat anything else!! Plus, IMO, I'd rather eat elk that's shot and butchered by us than to buy who knows what from a big grocery store.

BTW, nobody is shooting elk to serve in their restaurant, to do so would be illegal. There are several elk farms now that are certified by the USDA, and you can even pick up elk meat at many of the Farmer's Markets in PDX and even in Seattle. I know for sure that you can find it at the Beaverton one.

Try Echo, OR. Small close to Elk Hunting in Morrow County and the Blues; Deer Hunting, Pheasant; Most of Umatilla Co. is conservative and good place for hunters and fisherman, great safe places to live

Not all hunters are uneducated bafoons. And not all college-educated people are non-bafoons. Anyone who eats meat certainly should not put down hunting. It's a far more humane treatment of animals than the beef you eat, and if our species never started hunting, we'd still be walking on all fours.
