Elk hunting-republican cross reference.
I'm trying to identify a city in Oregon. My only clues are: prodominantly conservative views and lots of elk hunting.
That's all I have to go on, and I realize that there are likely several regions that fit this description. But any names could prove helpful.

Good idea, Karlsch.
I would also suggest virtually any city/town in Northeast/Eastern Oregon...and I mean Eastern as in east of Bend...
Pendleton, Baker, LaGrande, etc., and numerous smaller towns.

There is lots of elk hunting in the Eagle Cap Wilderness and Weneha area as well.

Does the person making the reference (or implying it, whatever) really mean elk hunting, as opposed to deer hunting? Other than the bigger and "more liberal" cities of Portland, Salem, Eugene and probably Ashland, most of small-town Oregon, especially east of the Cascades, takes hunting pretty seriously.
Elk hunting is more common in the northeast of Oregon - the Wallowas, the Blues. So the cities would most likely be Joseph, Baker, LaGrande, Burns, Pendelton, Ontario, but Bend, Redmond, Klamath Falls, Lakeview, Madras, The Dalles, Umatilla or all also possible. There is also elk hunting in Northern California, and Southern Oregon hunters frequently travel south to hunt elk.

Just as a note, I think you might want to be aware of the number of hunters in Oregon who lean left politically. It might sound a bit odd, but there are quite a few Oregon lefties who also hunt, for various reasons (everything from natural conservation to tradition to collecting game meats for their posh restaurant in Portland...)
So, I wouldn't presume that everyone you meet out in the woods with a rifle, shotgun, bow, or atlatl is conservative in a political sense, by any means.

I should add I have no beef with hunting (...groan...). I recall the first elk hunters I first heard talking all about the Wallowas were a bunch of professors at Oregon state! So, the joke above is just that. My workmate makes some wicked elk jerky, and I am hoping he gets his elk this year!
