I guess I should introduce myself.
I am Tracy, married to Dave (who's American) and we have 3 children. We are living in the UK at the moment but we're moving to Oregon later this year (If me Visa comes through!!!).

Anyway, we're hoping to move to the Meford area, as my husband has family there. But I wonder if anyone can help with Good schools?
Our eldest is very bright and need a good academic school to keep him going in the right direction. My husbands family have mostly home schooled but I really want our children to go to school. Any tips would be great. Thanks

I would consider St. Marys' Catholic School in Medford, OR. They really work on the academics and prepare for college and beyond. It is smaller and very nice people. I worked in the schools for 22 years and I still prefer the private schools. I think they would be an easier move for the homeschool child to transfer to regular ed. The transistion might be easier. They also seem to have more kids who recieve wonderful scholarships upon graduating.
Medford is a beautiful place. It is getting a lot busier in the recent years. Traffic is an issue. Hopefully they are working on that. There is an awful lot to do in the Jackson County area and beyond. it is really not a long drive from Medford, to the Oregon coast. It is about a 3 1/2 hour drive that is so pretty.

I'm in the same situration I am in California and have a son whos 16 doing real bad in schools. He hates school and now is in continuation. We had the hardest time getting anyone at his regular high to help us (counselors, principal etc) so my next move is to move to Oregon where my parents live so G-pa has a say. Good luck Tracy I need advise too/

If I may ask, Why is he doing bad? What are the circumstances?
Why at 16 is he still in school if he doesn't care for it?

You cannot be serious, asking this. At 16 he is still very much a minor and very much his parents responsibility. At minimum he needs to finish high school or die trying. Then he will be 18 and can do what he likes. I am a part time professional musician I cannot tell you how many times people come up to me and tell me that they had music lessons as kids but hated them and their parents let them get out of practicing with a shrug and how they wish that mom and/or dad had kicked their asses and made them practice. I do think though that Tamara needs to find out 'why' her son hates school (might have nothing to do with the school itself, (learning disability?), and overcome it with the right support. Education is important. It is vital. It is not optional.

Although it is not a majority, there are some that don't get any benefit out of public school at 16 yrs. old.
I'm just raising the question. Not concluding what someone should do, especially without any first hand knowledge. Often people think that moving somewhere else is the solution, when it may or may not be.

I was just looking for more info, so that my life experience may be shared to the benefit of someone else.
