Nature lover- SF is probably the best place for you, but it is very expensive. No place is perfect.

Black Shoe - Is that a Navy reference? I did 23 years as a "black shoe" myself.

Nature Lover - You might enjoy Corvallis or Eugene. The academic atmosphere provides much of the diversity and acceptance/embrace of liberals. I would stay away from the small towns though. You'll find hardworking, church-going, family-oriented folks there...they may challenge your ideas by living what they believe on a day-to-day basis.

Hey Dave & others,

for those who care, that "other" thread is locked (rather quickly, I must admit)

draw you own conclusions.

EDIT: I apologize to getting off topic but felt needed to address what Dave posted earlier. If someone else needs to post, please respect the thread starter and start another thread.
thanks

I've lived in Bend and currently am in Eugene and would agree that Eugene is far more friendly than Bend. Unfortunately, no snow in winter but it's only an hour away (as opposed to 15 mins. in Bend).

Also, have lived in Indy and from there moved to Madison, Wis., another so-called liberal town that was a lot more friendly than conservative Indy. So from my experience, yes, liberal towns are more friendly than conservative towns, to generalize.

Only if you are a liberal! Do you smell the bias?

Well the nation has moved to right of center over a few decades, and Colorado and Wyoming are no different than Oregon. Generally it is presumed that liberals tend toward urban areas because there have been, in the past, larger employers, more unions, and more democrats to take care of the social problems. In more rural areas, the tendency for people to farm or ranch supports property rights, a sense of self-sufficiency, and a dislike of outsiders or people who did not grow up there.

Also, the way it is in Colorado is that the suburbs are full of people who think they don't like the city because they believe that the suburbs are safer. The country in Colorado is full of people who want everyone else to just go away and leave them alone.

Unfortunately, everyone who used to work in urban areas (many of them from less desirable climates) have now decided that they want to throw off that lifestyle and go life in the rural mountain areas, bringing urban expectations with them for at least part of the year (newer homes, shopping convenience, entertainment, snow plowing). I have yet to see a retiree post of someone that wanted to move to Oregon to have a garden, for example. Or a retiree post for someone coming to Colorado that wants to shovel a long steep mountain drive.
