East Coasty is on a distinguished road
Default Relocating from East Coast to West Coast Oregon

Hi, My husbands job will be taking us from Virginia Beach, to Newport, OR area. I have no idea what Newport or the surrounding areas are like. I used to live in San Diego, and I live in Virginia Beach right now, so I'm kind of used to warmer weather, and many amenities available at all time. I know it is smaller there, but I'm looking for a great safe area for my family with great schools for my kids. One of my sons needs some special services, but is also considered gifted, so I need to make sure I find good services for him. I would like to buy a house if affordable, but not a fixer upper, and under 300k if possible. I also need a lot of parks and outdoor activities for my kids. We are having a hard time knowing where would be a good place for us to move to in that area. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I really want this to be a great experience for us. I am also used to shopping at Target, and going to the YMCA. Please hep!

The Oregon coast is nothing like San Diego. Not sure about Virginia Beach. The weather is cooler. You will learn to love polar fleece.

When I hear special needs and gifted, I think ASD. Not sure if that is your child's needs or not. Oregon schools aren't stellar in that regard. Oregon has underfunded it's schools since 1991 when they passed measure 5. Be prepared to be a huge advocate for your child in getting their special needs met. We call gifted TAG (Talented And Gifted) out here.

There is no lack of outdoor activities for kids in Oregon. In fact it is one of the best things about living here. You will just learn to embrace the weather and go out regardless.

Anywhere in Newport or the surrounding areas is going to be a wonderful, safe area. And 300k will get you a GREAT house though, easily.

The climate will take some getting used to. It's roughly in the low 40s to low 60s year round with lots of grey, overcast days and lots of rain or drizzle for part of the day. The summer tends to be a bit clearer and more reliably sunny, and there is a bit of fog in the winter. Rain storms (not t-storms) can roll in any time of the year though and dump rain on you. It also tends to be rather windy.

The biggest thing is going to be getting a house in a good school district and making sure you have good schools for your son. Unfortunately, I can't help you with any info about the school district(s) in Lincoln County.
