Oregon *tends* to be more conservative the farther south, and the further east you go. The major exception to this is Ashland.

Although Oregon is often considered to be a liberal state, if this poll is correct, Oregonians who identify themselves as conservative (35%) outnumber those who identify themselves as liberal (26%):

Mississippi Rates as the Most Conservative U.S. State

Apparently 39% consider themselves to "none of the above."

While that's true, Oregon is still more liberal and less conservative than the nation as a whole and ranks as the 6th most liberal state in the country.

That said, what people consider to be liberal or conservative here is rather different from what people in, say, the deep south consider to be liberal or conservative. Just look at the vast differences in elected Democrats from the southern US as compared to the northeast and west. The differences on the Republican side are also pretty glaring. Here, Chris Dudley is considered a Republican. In much of the south, he'd have been running as a rather progressive Democrat.

Lived there for many years and I would not consider Oregon as a whole----conservative by any means.

Certainly not. There are conservative pockets west of the cascades (Linn county in particular is deep deep red), but for the most part the inhabited parts of Oregon are anywhere from moderate to very liberal.

I believe this could be a major factor in the contradiction;

"...It could have something to do with the vilification of the term “liberal” over the past decade—a battle conservatives successfully won by painting pictures of out-of-control spenders who were soft on terrorism and against economic growth. It’s curious whether the term “progressive” would elicit different responses..."

Historically, Oregon conservatives have been very progressive. Many of the state's major public works projects, like water supplies and roads, have been initiated by the business community in an effort to develop Oregon into a place friendlier for growth. The original Bull Run Water Committee read like a Who's Who of Oregon Business. It has only been in the last 20 years that conservative has become synonymous with obstructionist.

Hello promise, I didn't find your post offensive. Thank you for your honesty. We too are looking to relocate to southern Oregon and were wondering about the reception newcomers would receive. We are not native Californians but did receive some 'cold shoulder' reception when people saw our vehicle plates. California is just too pricey to retire in and we are looking for a peaceful place to retire to. Blessings to you!
