Smile lumber mill odors in Albany?

We are moving to Albany next month (June). I saw a posting about Lumber mill odors. Where are the odors and how far out of town do we need to be to avoid the annoying smells. also, what time of day do they occur? Thanks for any information on this.

well, coming/going along the I5, I can remember knowing we were coming towards Albany well before you could see anything by the smell alone. Going anywhere near it was nauseating. I dont know what they changed, but the last several times Ive been past, you cant smell a thing. even my ever so easily offended ******* daughter never noticed any stench. We also stopped off to grab something to eat not so long ago, and again, no smell.
Hopefully we have someone on the board that lives or works there, that can give you some definate answers, but theres my 2cents.
Tiffany

Default smelly odors

Thanks for the input. That is reasurring and I guess the pollution restrictions and so forth have made Albany a sweeter smelling community. Will find out for sure next month!

Default No smell!

I have been living and working in the area since January.

They have cleaned it up, and they (the city) have been working very hard to clean up the town, and it is really starting to show.

Hope this helps.

RR

I have lived here 38 yrs, Was some odor years back from paper mill north of town on I-5 but no more. This is a farming town among others so if you move next to a farm, NO GRIPPING about a little dust from farming or a little smoke from field burning in summer, couple days at most. If you can't handle that stay where you are.

I've lived here for 6 years. I spend a great deal of time in Millersburg (where the paper mill is) and although there ARE days when you can smell "Albany" they are fairly rare and I continue to be amused by all the people who "remember when they were kids..." turning people off from coming here.
Albany is a great town with a lot to offer...I moved here from Hawaii and have NEVER been turned off by the smell...and any minor inconvenience there is more than overcome by the friendly people that live here.

hey, i said that where i remembered as a kid the awful smell, that its No Longer There. If anyone thought i was trying to turn them off from Albany, of saying that the stink is still present, Im sure sorry. I was trying to say it USED to smell awful, but no longer does. Im sorry, i thought i was clear in saying that before.

tiffela74...no offense intended toward your comments! I read them all the wya through and appreciate that you updated your "experience." As soon as I hit the post button I thought ... I should have clarified that!

It DOES come up a lot in these boards though...and mostly from people who haven't lived here, or even BEEN here in years.

Again, I apologize for the confusion! MY FAULT!

Its all good. I live along the coast, and I get tired of those who say "Oh, dont move to the Oregon Coast, it rains constantly from July-June and you never never see sunlight (as i am looking outside to yet another beautiful clear blue day) Gets pretty aggrivating, just as Im sure some peoples assumptions that the bad smell is still there (ITS NOT ITS NOT ITS NOT ) in Albany and surrounding. I often wonder how many people have lost out on an incredible experience in Oregon due to the exaggerations of the "Gloom and Doom" crowd.
So, we're all good right Dave?
I like Albany, we were there about a month ago and spent the day at a park w/some really fat ducks. lol my kids were trying to feed them, and the tater chips were literally bouncing off their backs. Those ducks have NO chance of starving. lol, but it was just beautiful, all the blooming trees, dark green grass, and lots of other people out there enjoying yet another beautiful day in Albany Oregon.
