Agness, Oregon help
Hello forum peeps! I have searched all day for information on Agness, Or.
I would love to learn more about it's history, and see some photographs as well. As close as I could come is gold beach. I'd really like to know more about it than it's proximity to gold beach. if anyone could offer me help, thanks in advance

Well, about 2 years ago in April I tried to go through Agness as a shortcut from I-5 (Merlin) to hit Highway 101 but couldn't make it pass Galice because the roads were closed for the heavy snow season. Agness, Oregon, is gold country. That's one rugged place.

Thanks Seashelly. That's something, because none of my maps show Galice either, which will put me closer when I do Google Earth!
I wonder if anyone here has ever/does live in Agness and might come and rescue me with some more help?

They just did a story on the Sunday Today show (NBC) regarding Agness, they showed how the US mail is still delivered by jet boats.
You may want to look on their web site and see if they have any history on the area.
good luck.

Hello,
Agness is located 38 miles east of Gold Beach. The population is approx. 250 and the world famous Rogue River runs right thru the center of town!
Agness was once a mining community that has since turned to an outdoorsmans paradise. Agness is noted for it's salmon and steelhead fishing, hiking and camping.

I just wanted to advise Seashelly that she may not have been aware of it, but the route she is talking about not being able to travel is the same route that the family from California tried to take at Thanksigiving time a year or two ago and the husband died trying to get out to get help for his family.

I've been to Agness once via a trip up the Rogue River on one of the Jet River Boats. That's been 35 or 40 years ago. All I remember of it was the General Store/Post Office by the river. I figured that's all there was of the town.
It may be gold country, but I don't think there's any serious mining in the area anymore. Maybe the occasional out-of-towner trying their luck with a metal detector.

you can get to agness two ways one is from the hwy 42 got to powers, oregon and then follow the old hwy up over the mountain it turns to gravel and drops you off in agness on the other side of gold beach nice drive but stick to the main road dont take any little spur roads. the other way is to go to gold beach and follow the river all the way up to the bridge and then accross the bridge is agness go right and you will end up in grants pass oregon go to the left and the store and old hwy is there that goes to powers oregon. dont try this in the winter Iron mountain will be covered in snow. This area has clamed the lives of many most recently the kim family. Be carefull and find some gold.

The Powers Highway to Agness is the prettiest route in my opinion. Love the deep mountain valley views.
