Default Any Ontario Old Timers out there?

I'm going to be near Ontario next year and was hoping to go by my grandparent's old places but it's been so long I can't remember where they were.
Anyone out there been around long enough to remember the Hong Far Cafe, or Huey Apartments?
All I can remember is, I think last time I was in Ontario (YEARS ago) the Hong Far Cafe location had a consignment shop or thrift store there. And the apartments I remember were a single-story brick building on a corner and I remember waaaaayyyyy back when I was little I think a family named Parker lived in a house around the corner. Also I remember sneaking out in the middle of the night in the summer and walking to a park.... we were all pretty young then so it couldn't have been far from the building
Sorry the information is so vague but it's been about 30 years! If there's anyone out there who remembers where either of these are (or were?) located I would be so grateful.
Thanks!!

No self-respecting eastern Oregonian would ever leave the east part of the state. Sorry, but it's been at least four years since I passed through Ontario...wish I could help you.

Hey, my friend just suggested you try contacting the Ontario City PD...maybe they've got someone around there who knows the old-timers. Anyway, good luck to you.

To Beasley. The apartments you lived in are located at 67 NW 3rd Ave & 308 NW 1st St, and are known as the "Huey" apartments. The park you mention is Laxon. It is on the corner of NW 4th St. and NW 4th Ave. The Hong Far was owned by Huey Hing. His daughter was a High School Classmate of mine. Huey built the apartments in about 1967. I am the present owner of the apartments.

Default Born in Ontario 1932

I think I'm qualified as an old timer being born in Ontario, Or. in 1932, but left at an early age as my Dad worked for a Contractor who built Fish Hatchery's and Dams. I still have relatives living in Ontario. If some of the old timers read this they may remember the old Castle on the Idaho side looking toward Ontario. My Granddad Hiram Jackson Tharp helped build the Castle back in the early 1900's. He also worked as a Stoker at the Moore Hotel which no longer exits. As a kid those were the good ole' days. I was trying to find pictures of the Moore Hotel on the internet to no avail. It burned to the ground but I don't know the year. I would like to hear from anyone who can still remember or has pictures.

Look carefully on the right side of the street. A buck a night for the basic room:

The same street now:

Default Moore Hotel

Thanks for posting the pics of the Moore Hotel. The newspaper clipping looks like it goes back to the 1920's. I already had the one of the room. Some streets don't change much in the new pic.

To Darrel1932
Do you or anyone else recall hearing about a man that was killed (gored) by a friends Bull (as his young son witnessed) on a farm in Ontario in June of 1942? That was my Grandfather
John F. Russell. He also used to play the piano at a church. I'm looking for any memories or pictures of that time, 1930's & 40's in Ontario and Vale where the children were later moved to with a Uncle, H.R.Moys to a sugar beet farm. My mother, (one of the children) passed away last year and I'm unable to locate photos at this time. I would like to be able to pass on family history with my Granddaughter before my time comes and about what life was like for people there in those days. I would love any info.or pics I can download.
many thanks

The Moore Hotel certainly brings back memories! It had a beautiful rock fireplace and was a meeting place for many cattlemen. When I was little, I went in and out and in and out. It had the only automatic door I had ever seen.

Love to find this site, my mom was born in Ontario in 1920 on a homestead and she shared so much of her wonderful life in eastern Oregon with us, love the people still there and all the relations around the area, are there any Cammann, Browning, Blanton, Presley, Redsil or other of these peoples relatives looking in here/

Default The Moore Hotel

I lived for 9 years in Ontario and mail from the East, whereI was from, got sent to Canada often! But we took our kids (5) to the Moore Hotel every Sunday so they would learn how to have manners outside of the home. I recall one time I went to the side where the booths were and saw all these cowboy hats going up and down and couldn't figure out what caused it. Then I discovered they were chewing their food!! I was a Gallagher at the time and "Buck" and his dad, Pat Gallagher were attorneys there. Pat was a raconteur of the best sort and lived on the corner of the main drag up the hill and 11th street. This was all in the 1945-1953 time period. I wish some of the folks I knew still lived there..all were so colorful and fun to know. Thanks for letting me share with you.
