I have an upcoming inteview for a job in Hood River and I was wondering what you can all tell me about the area? Any info/impressions would be helpful but I'd specifically like to know if housing is affordable, utilities high, etc. Also, I'm a vegetarian and was wondering about the grocery stores/restaurants.

I'd be moving from Arizona which seems to be comparable to Portland as far as bills go. Thanks!

EDIT: maybe a better question about housing is can you find places to rent? Looking online I can't seem to find anything...

Congratulations on the Hood river job interview. That area, including WA, Mosier, etc., is one of the most beautiful areas I've ever been in.

Try looking over in WA for a place...I just glanced through Craigslist, and found this:
House in the Columbia River Gorge (http://portland.craigslist.org/grg/apa/1536228936.html - broken link)

Go to Craigslist, Portland. Then click on the tab for "grg" There're a few places which are not too bad looking.

I know there's a veg. store right off of the east I-84 exit to HR. You won't have any problems finding the type of foods you want.

I'd be moving from Arizona which seems to be comparable to Portland as far as bills go. IMO, the housing costs in HR far exceed those in Portland. Just depends on what you can afford.

Good luck to you ~

Yes, HR is a bit of a tourist area and prices are similar to Portland. Things have come down somewhat in the last year, but that's true of just about anywhere.

Thanks for the replies and link! I did check craigslist but I typed Hood River into the search box rather than clicking on the Gorge link which made all the difference.
