Question MD to OR

We are moving from MD to OR. I will be teaching in Prospect, near Medford. I'm wondering what utility costs are like. Electric, cable, internet, etc. I have a job and my husband does not. I want to know if it's possible to live on a teachers salary there. I'm taking a pay cut from MD, but my hope is that the cost of living is lower. I have noticed that rent for most places ranges in the $600-$800. Rent here for a 2 BR is 1100-1200. Cost of living is important in our decision to move there.

Electricity is pretty cheap in the PNW compared to the east coast. Cable and internet would be about the same, if they are available at all in Prospect. I would bet on cable, you may have to go to satellite for high speed internet. Jackson County has the highest home prices in the state, mostly thanks to Ashland and Jacksonville. You should be able to find a clean house to rent for $800, but don't expect a lot of modern updates, like a built in dishwasher or insulation. Heating costs might be pretty high, and you will want air conditioning in the summer.

Cost of living will depend a lot on your lifestyle. If you cut your own firewood and heat with wood, you can save a bundle on heating costs. Yes, you will be able to live on a teacher's salary, but you will not be well to do, and will have to budget carefully.

After coming from MD, Prospect will seem like a real bargain....and the area is absolutely beautifull.... great fishing & hunting....Watch out for the Sasquatch though, they're all over the hills around Prospect.....
