Albany is only about 9-10 miles from Corvallis, so it's not really "far" (maybe 20 minutes in traffic). You'll get a lot more home/apartment for your money in Albany.

If that's too far, I would consider Salem if your husband's job is on the north side of Albany, or Corvallis if his job is on the south side.

From the map it looks as though it is located in South Albany. Looks as though Corvallis might be our focus although we will get a better feel once we get there. I wonder though if one if not associated with OSU is Corvallis still a good choice? Seems as though most things centre around the University.

Yes, most things do center around OSU, but that's not a bad thing--the university pulls in a lot of attractions and events that wouldn't normally get to a town of 50,000 people.

The public library in Corvallis is one of the best I've ever been to. Also, you may be able to get a courtesy library card to OSU's library as a resident.

I think you will find the people of Oregon to be friendly, no matter where you live. Albany would be my choice for a place to live. Renting for awhile is a good idea, after you are here for a year you will know more about the best place for you to live, than any of us could tell you now.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Each area does have its appeal. I guess when we get there we will also get a better idea of where is best although Corvallis does sound more appealing. And yes we will most definitely be renting before making the decision about where to buy.

Default Update... now in Albany

I posted a few months ago about moving to the area. We finally decided on Albany. We are renting and took a 6 months lease. We figure that should give us some time to look around at some other areas.

I like Albany. But whenever I ask about things to do , everyone says that its best to check out Corvallis especially for kids programs. I am sure sure if there just isn't anything here for kids or the people Ive spoken to just are not aware. I would say though that this is one of the friendliest places I have been.

We went to Corvallis over the weekend and it definitely has a different vibe to Albany especially around the University area. We were only passing through so cant say much but will be checking out the place some more.

In the meantime I'm on the hunt to find out more about the area... Albany in particular. What stands out here is that this place has a lot of history so that intrigues me.

Just wanted to post my first impressions. We will see what happens in 6 months.
