Yep, we've been hitting the 60's here a few times the last week, and supposed to stay this warm. This is what I don't get when people say that "Oregon and Washington are cold". Try going anywhere else that isn't south of here and watch what "cold" really is like.

Wonder if we're in the 60's in February, just how bad it will be come July or Aug! Damn, I might have to get a place to live on the coast then!

Admgr; I work/live in Ilwaco. I can tell you the ambiance on the Peninsula gets 'rosier' as you travel North on it. Ilwaco is small, but has a colorful/vibrant Port. The Port is the heart of Ilwaco. It operates with the talents of 33% gourmet restaurants / 33% art galleries / 33% charter boat fishing. The one industry there in Jessies' Fish Company. We also feature the awesome Cape D State Park, USCG Station & their National Motor Boat Lifesaving School. Ilwaco is a cool place. I can tell you that the ambiance you are looking to avoid increases noticeably the more North you go on the Peninsula. Also, East (inland). But Ilwaco and especially Seaview are quite unique. At least 2 live theater groups in the area. 3, 4 star restaurants. Very cosmopolitian with a good "Island Protocol" ethic. ALSO the best is that the 9% state tax is 17 Mi down the road- over the bridge in Astoria. ANOTHER cool place! But that tax......

Jeeproller - I heart your little village. If it weren't 3K miles away I'd be looking for a cottage myself. Love the tiny houses. I came home to Tennessee and built stone walls on the sides of my porch after being inspired. I guess those stones were ballast? they are river rock around here but the same effect.

It didn't strike me as gentrified as you describe, but that was about 4 years ago.

Are you sure you didn't see the rock walls in Seaview, next door? I've walked my dog on the little avenues there and noticed the same thing. Also, Gearhart OR does alot of that. Looks like the Marthas' Vineyard of the West in Gearhart. How neat you achieved the same effect with riverrock! I did the base of mine here in ledgerock. Because moss looks prettier climbing up rock than your siding. lol
Re Ilwacos' gentrification; it was going gangbusters about 4 years ago! Lots of plans, lots of ideas, etc...after the 2004 Lewis & Clark festival brought in so much national attention. But now, dreams are crumbling. As I mentioned, it's really the Port of Ilwaco that is holding up so well in the downturn. The Port merchants formed the IMA:Ilwaco Merchants Asso to help find ways to market what we have here, other than the dramatic sea & land. ALOT of the marketing seems to take place online. Example; DiscoverIlwaco on FB. deb

They are fishing towns. That probably means Redneck to someone who is a text addict and can't find the shift key.

People visiting are different than people who live there. There is a huge redneck contingent in the touristiest town on the coast--Seaside--where a friend of mine grew up. North Coast isn't too bad though, mostly. Can't speak for WA coast.

I don't think most of what you consider Redneck actually exists in Oregon. There are pockets of it yes, but for the most part we're very much live and let live.
