Good morning, looking for some helpful input from any current Oregonians. My GF and I are looking to relocate from NYC to Oregon (we are a lesbian couple...she is white and I am black). She is a dancer and I work in law enforcement in NYC. I am looking into Portland PD or Oregon state police. My issue is areas to live, demographics, etc. If anyone can help me with the following criterion, we would greatly appreciate it.

Climate plays a part in the decision so are there places I should be looking at that may not rain as much or is not gray as long? Population is also important so looking for a place that's close to a major city. We are not looking to buy so renting for a decent price is important....hopefully around the $1200 per month range. Maybe a region that doesnt mind us homos.....that would be nice. I was leaning toward oswego lake/mountain park area bc of its proximity to portland and the neighborhood offerings like the recreation center and lake, but I would love any other suggestions. Still trying to figure out if moving is the thing to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest looking into the Portland PD, Portland would most likely fill the requirements your looking for. The Oregon State Police positions are filled by area, and if accepted into the OSP you are assigned where needed. This means you could find yourself assigned to just about anywhere in the state.

Thanks, Terry. The trooper that I spoke to said pretty much the same thing. He went on to say that there were vacancies all over the state and that they gave you an opportunity to request up to 5 locations but that ultimately the needs of the department are paramount. Which is understandable. But I am leaning toward Portland PD at this point. Thanks again for the input.

You will find a nice place for what your budget is. I don't think that will be a problem at all.

Just a friendly FYI here, but when Portland Police Bureau last opened their application process they received an overwhelming number of applications. My friend's son is going through the process. He was lucky.

I am not trying to discourage you, but in this economy worry about the climate after you get a job. Their hiring process takes over a year...but I am told that lateral transfers, if chosen, go through an accelerated process.

Best of luck to you ~
