It looks like it will be a while before 101 is open again north of Brookings. The slide is still moving a few inches an hour, and then they will have a mess to dig out. The Carpenterville bypass is sort of an off-road adventure, paved but rugged.

As always, tripcheck.com is your friend.

At least there IS a bypass, lots of sections of the coast don't have that. I can't remember if I have driven that bypass section and if it is suitable for all vehicles. Tripcheck doesn't show any limitations.

I saw drone camera footage that made it really look like that road had been built on top of an old landslide, a pretty common problem on the coast and in the Coast Range/Siskiyous.

The Carpenterville Road is very crooked. No semi trucks, 40' length limit. At the moment, the Carpenterville Road bypass takes about an hour.

Yes, I just got off the phone with old friends who live at Whaleshead Cove. They can get into Brookings because the slide is on the north side of the bridge. You are right about the old slide. When they were building their house about 20 years ago the same section of the highway slid. At the time, ODOT graded a single gravel lane on the inland side of the slide, mostly for construction access, but they let traffic through with pilot cars. It will probably be April before they even get that far.

Anybody planning a Memorial Day road trip should probably pick a different route, at least if they are in a hurry. I suspect this will put a real dent in south coast tourism.

101 is now a one lane gravel road around the slide. There are about 20 minute delays getting through the work zone, but that beats the hour it takes to do the Carpenterville bypass.

Thanks for the info Larry. How long does the gravel one way road extend? I am guessing visiting the Samuel H Boardman Scenic area will be closed? Was planning on going from Gold Beach area down to the Redwoods in CA in mid April, but this could cause a lot of driving difficulty.

I don't believe anything is closed at this time. Construction will be continuing in that area for the foreseeable future. Expect at least a 20 minute delay in the area. But that is just normal traveling pretty much anywhere in Oregon.

Second lane under construction

Tidewater Contractors and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) crews widened the gravel roadway at Hooskanaden Slide 12 miles north of Brookings, but it won’t be open to two-way traffic until early April and won’t be permanently fixed until October.

Tripcheck.com doesn't show much amiss down there... or am I misreading Tripcheck?

Zoom in a bit more - it shows up as a single lane of traffic with a delay.

There is also a temporary width restriction

Quote:
US101 MP 347.78 NB & SB (north of Brookings) Effective July 31, 2017, this section of US101 will be restricted to 16 feet 00 in. in width. The estimated completion date for this project is August 31, 2019.
