Default Oregon Radio Stations

Normally, this isn't something that would bother me and it really doesn't, I just find it funny. How many folks from California moved here and notice the quality of radio stations? It's not so much the music, although the Oldies stations in the Coos Bay area played good music but I've noticed the DJ's are really bad... I mean really bad. I think they should just stick to playing music and commercials. Maybe Portland is different but I haven't heard much since I've only been there once.

What I mean is they really have no clue how to keep listeners interested or even entertained. For example, here in Klamath Falls, I listen to this one station that has a morning show. This guy takes about 10 seconds every few words to finish an entire sentence. You can pretty much guess what he's going to say. It's like he's trying to read the entire sentence before he says it and then forgets what he's going to say.

Now the one in Coos Bay was the worst. This was actually Christmas Eve or Christmas morning last year. Instead of playing nonstop Holiday music, this kid decides to take over. He had no idea what to say so he starts to sing a made up version of the 12 Days of Christmas and he even messes that up. I guess he got bored so he started talking to himself about things that made no sense to anyone else.

Anyone have any experiences similar to these?

I forget what the exact statistic is, but something like 75% of Portland radio is owned by the big two media giants, and our music radio scene is just about the most bland, generic thing imaginable. OPB has ditched most of its weekday music programming, and KBOO is so eclectic it's too eclectic.

I listen to internet radio stations, mostly, which are in the process of being run out of business by the organization that controls music royalty rights.

I mostly listen to KLCC, which has repeaters in Roseburg, Bend, Coos Bay (I think) and some other places. I also listen to Jefferson Public Radio. They have a morning general interest talk show host named Jeff Golden who, wonder of wonders, is reasonable and balanced while still managing to be entertaining.

I haven't lived in Northern Oregon for a while, but Mt. Hood Community College used to have a great jazz station.

Most commercial radio stations are crap. There's an AM station in Roseburg at 1240 (KQEN?) that has a great noon news hour, sandwiched in between the ubiquitous Rush and Lars drivel.

Two Other Things I Dislike about Our Radio Stations:
1. The DJs have resorted to reading us news and highlights off the internet which we have already read at least a week ago.
2. When they have a call-in contest, instead of winning instantly your name is placed among a week's worth of other names so you actually just are winning a chance to win their prize......along with a for sure you-can-count-on-us-spamming-you consolation prize.
