You hit the nail on the head there. There is a lot of antagonism towards outsiders, directed especially at people from California. Funny thing? The one's with that attitude usually come from California themselves.
However it's true the job market is a poor one...and has been for a long time. You can find work, but don't expect it to pay well or even be full time. Lots of seasonal type jobs at places like Harry and David, and yes there's a fair amount of "not what you know but who you know" around there. It took me 10 years before feeling like I fit in, and even then it wasn't easy. I finally moved because I met a fellow living upstate, but looking back I didn't realized how insular GP-Med-Ashland could get until you get away from there. I'd never consider moving back.

You know, an Oregon governor, coined the phrase, don't californicate oregon.
There are lots of Oregon people who do not like 'those' people, with the big bucks, who come up
and buy houses and drive up property prices.
But that is the way of the world.
This is beautiful country. Mountains, rivers, lakes, hiking, boating, skiing, and great for those who
like to create, art, writing, pottery, wood furniture, carving, etc.
It has its limitations.
Job market now is down, like the rest of the country.
Real estate market is down, just like the rest of the country.
Can you get a job? Yes.
Is the money what you were making? Probably not.
Can you buy a house? Yes., probably the best time to buy one.

Grants Pass is a great place! Sure, there are areas that aren't so great, but you will find that everywhere. And, guess what - - I live in this area and I am not a bum or on welfare ! Myself or my husband are not doctors or lawyers, we have two kids and we all do just fine. And yes, we both make over $10.00 an hour!
Jobs aren't easy to come by these days, but if you open yourself up to look in Medford too, I'm sure you'll find something. I can't believe some people's comments here - It kind of makes me wonder if all they saw was welfare, druggies and losers, maybe they need to evaluate where they hang out at !!
Good luck, I hope it all works out for you!

Remember that most of these communities have a lot of their employment in the wood products industries. I expect that many locals are scrambling of jobs.
