I was recently laid off from my job here in Phoenix Arizona. My wife and I and our 4 kids are taking this time to visit with family and then move up to Portland Oregon. The only problem is we are not sure what we are going to do for a place to live when we get there. Are there weekly rentals we could find for the 100 to 200 dollar a week range while we look for jobs. Our credit is horrible mine from a past marriage, hers is mostly medical from the 4 kids. And we will only have about $3500dollars to our name. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

When we first moved here, we camped in a tent, and in a station wagon. Spent about 200 per week on that. Fortunately it is summer.
Check the state parks website they let you stay for wks at a time.

This is sort of tangential, but I once did a lot of tent camping in hunting camps, sometimes in marginal weather. I found that if I cut a foam carpet pad and carpet to fit the inside of the tent, it made a big difference in the comfort.

From now to the first part of October, tent camping could be pretty pleasant. Improved campgrounds have showers and toilets, but not all of them have laundromats. If they keep a neat camp, they could probably find a place to stay all summer. If they are messy, nobody will want them around. It is sometimes hard to be neat with kids.

I understand that landlords are scratching for tenants in Portland, but by the time you rent something big enough for a family and plunk down first, last and security deposit, it would put a big hole in $3500.

Try Motel 6. I think they have monthly rates around $600-$700. Being in a bigger city, it might be a little more.

I stayed at a Motel 6 for a couple weeks and that was about the going rate per month ($600-$700/month). I'm sure prices have gone up but call some up and they should give you the current rate.
