I read in the paper that this last week 5 new restuarants have opened. Hey did anyone see those Killer whales in the Bay a few days ago?
Waterlily,
Any idea what new restaurants are opening? Also I had read that North Bend is doing a major downtown urban renewal and is looking for businesses to move into the area...have you ever heard of Trader Joe's and has anyone mentioned a grocery store such as this coming into the area? Those of you from California all probably know TJ's, I can't imagine what I'll do without it.

We have some kind of natural foods store and there are farmers markets. I don't know of any Trader Joe's.

Lots Big stuff going on downtown along the 101 highway. They are adding on to the casino and building a seven story hotel. Also a large shoping center by the bay will go in. They'll build a broadwalk by the bay as well. There's no way to tell what shops will go in there yet expect Home Depot is supposed to build there.
The resturuants oh I'm not sure I can remember them. They are not chains as far as I know. One is a natural healthy fast food type of thing. One is a steak resruaruant in the mall. There may be 2 mexican food resturuants. One is kind of a coffe shop that expanded to food. I'm really not sure if I've got this all. I just quickly read about it in the local newspaper.

Things are changing here. They've started on that seven story building by the casino. It looked like the basic stuff was done for the framing of the first story, so we'll see how long it takes it to go up. I can't believe we are getting something close to a skyscraper here.

Well, I sure wouldn't move to Coos Bay/North Bend from Ventura for the schools! Do some research for sure. My kids have taught in Moorpark in Ventura County and in Camarillo, and they have some good schools. When I looked up school ratings in CitySearch and City Data type sites, CB and NB got very low ratings. Eugene, Portland, and Corvallis have some very good schools, as do other carefully chosen places in Oregon. One of my children lives in NB and it is very conservative, but there are some new establishments. Still not a thriving economy though, I think. Caution is advised before deciding to raise a family there. Very different if one is talking about retirement or singles life... very different needs and priorities from a growing family! I'm a grandmother of many, with a university and teaching background. Almost nothing besides your family values will be as important to your children's future as the quality of their education, and it starts with preschool!

When you say NB is very conservative, what do you mean. What experiences have you had there that give NB this title?

just trying to learn more about the mindset there.
thx

Smile Coos Bay, North Bend

Also looking for an Orgeon move from Arizona. As a child spent most of my summers in Sandy Hook NJ. Miss the ocean but not the East Coast. I write technical books for a living, kind of "how to" stuff. Great success here but the summers are HOT and crime is really on the rise. Want my kids to have a better life. Have looked at Astoria, Grants Pass and areas surrounding Portland. Came across Coos Bay and North Bend. Seem to be a lot of job ops there. Any tell me if there is any "travel baseball" there? Two sons are big into ball and I can't see moving to an area that doesn't have a team and a good place to play.

Also, to the person from Phx... any luck? What did you folks decide?

Wink Still waiting

Writerguy,

My husband is still waiting to hear from the possible employer in the Coos Bay area. In the meantime we may have a job opportunity that would be a step up here with the city of Scottsdale. Everything is still unknown. I have many mixed feeling regarding the Coastal life, but I'm still open to the experience. I have to say that I wouldn't want to sell our home here in AZ just in case the Oregon Coast didn't work out. I fear the gloomy days and after realizing that we might move to a different place it really made me appreciate AZ more and realize all the things I do like about it here. HOT...yes, but I do like hot summer nights and I love the jolt that a bright sunny day gives my psyche. We'll have to see what the future holds... for now it's lots of sun screen and air conditioned days.

Best of luck to you and your family!

sunspotsAZ
