I will say, Im not thrilled w/most of the views of Coos Bay/North Bend via Hwy101. My first visit here when we were looking for a home to rent, I was kinda dismayed myself. UNTIL we got off 101 and started looking through the actual towns. There are some wonderful neighborhoods, breathtaking views and houses that beat out many of the Historical Homes Ive seen in Portland. There are many many well kept parks my kids love to play at, and we've met so many friendly helpful people since moving here. We just ended up buying a house here in CB and Im so glad. Ive met all the neighbors, in fact, the lady next to me, took me right over to the people across the street and introduced me to them. They in turn, gave me an impromptu tour of their home, plus their phone number in case of emergency or need. The couple up the road, brought us a housewarming gift of handmade kitchen towels, and even our kids have made new friends. I like living here. And thats coming from someone who was pretty bent on NOT living here. Ya, theres some run down areas, a few neighborhoods you couldnt GIVE me house to live in that I would, we have a lack of the wild nightlife here (a PLUS IMO!!!) and the biggest complaint I have about CB/NB....no Applebees. sigh. Someday, Someday I WILL convince them to build here! I think its a very good place to live and raise a family. Theres much more good here than there is bad. And boy, you just cant beat the fresh crab. Or our beautiful weather in Sept. and Oct. wonderful I think!
Its not for everyone, but boy, it sure is for me and my family!

I just want to say that you should visit the oregon Coast in the winter before you move here. I have lived in Florence for a year now and I was from Virginia. In Virginia we had 4 seasons of weather each year. On the Oregon Coast, in the winter you get a chilling rain with wind and it sometimes lasts weeks in a row without letting up. The beaches are beautiful, but it's cold and windy out there most of the time. On the east coast, from Spring to fall it is the same, or close, temperature at the beach as it is inland. Not the case on the Northwest Coast. I personally become gloomy here, particularly in the winter months. I never knew my moods were related to the weather outside until I spent a wjole winter here. Make sure you know if you can handle it first. We are trying to sell our place and move back, but we are trapped in this really slow real estate market now.

Yes, Coos Bay is very industrial. It is the largest deep water port between San Francisco Bay and the Puget Sound. It can accommodate huge ships, with a channel depth of 47 feet, beam of 197 feet, and vertical clearance of 143 feet. The largest bridge building company in the world is headquartered in Coos Bay. Coos Bay will host the shipping terminal for a new LNG pipeline. Since lumber and fishing have collapsed, Coos Bay and Astoria are the only coastal towns in Oregon with the economic base to support the people who live there.

To all who have been following this thread that I began in June or so....we have decided to take the big step and move to Coos Bay. My husband has a wonderful job opportunity there and I think this will be a great change for him. We will be heading up mid to late September and trust that this year will be a fabulous experience for the whole family. Can't wait to take hikes on the trails and get back into my photography. Thank You to all who have provided advice and support throughout the past months....we look forward to learning all about life on the Oregon Coast.

Sincerely,
sunspotsAZ

Default Welcome

I hope that you are enjoying the bay area about now. I was actually born and raised in a smaller town to the south and have been living in coos bay for about 6 years now. I love it here, the people are nice, the crime is low, the schools, regardless of there ratings, are good. You should send your child to blossom gulch elementary if you are in coos bay, they have nature trails and such right in the back yard, my nephew just started going there. This is a great place to raise children. Sure when they are a teen they will dream of some place bigger and better, however here they wont be exposed to as much bad things as bigger towns are. We have beautiful parks, churches and lets not forget the biggest and best, the ocean. I cant imagine living away from the ocean. If you are hankering for a change of scenery, i believe Roseburg is an hour or so away and Eugene is 3 hours away (all depending on how fast you drive! lol). Well I hope you are enjoying the coast, its not gloomy all the time! I cant wait for the rain, but thats just me!

Default forgetful

I forgot to mention I am a mother of one 2 yr old and soon a second child. So I get your worries about the schools and family stuff. I dont really know of any groups other than the new moms group that meets every month, I havent gone yet, but I think its more of a support group. I mostly hang with my sisters and their kids or others in my family. Im a stay at home mom as well, and i do wish I could do more out of the home. I do know of a play group though, there is one at the annex in north bend in october, its held once a month by the healthy start program.
