Coos Bay Family Life
Hi,
My husband and I are considering moving to Coos Bay where he may have a job opportunity, but I am worried about my 2 year old daughter and the pre-schools/ Elementary schools available. We presently live in Phoenix Arizona where we have many schools available to choose from....public,parochial,waldorf,charter schools and the list goes on. I have researched the schools in both North Bend and Coos Bay but I would like a parents view on the school cultures and how they feel the schools are in the area. Any information would be helpful. Also if you could tell me a bit about life with a toddler in your area and what you do during all the rainy days? I've lived in Arizona all my life, I can't imagine not seeing the sun for at least 350 days a year.
Thanks,

Here at the coast we are used to Californians coming to visit and moving here.
Most babies just hang out with their parents but there are daycare places.
We see the sun a bit more often then you'd expect. It is mostly sunny during summer and into fall. There are days in winter where you get sun breaks but we do get about 65 inches of rain per year.

Hi,
Thanks for letting me know about your upcoming move. We are still in the application/interviewing process, but you never know what will happen. I'm very interested in having the experience of living somewhere that is so beautiful and in a small town atmosphere. My sister lives in Ashland OR, but we just can't find any job opps for my husband there. Anyway, please let me know how your experience goes and I'll keep you updated as to if our move becomes a reality. Best wishes.

Thanks for telling me that the sun does shine for more than a few days a year. I have this vision of living amongst fog for days on end and no way out. I think it sounds like a nice change for us and a new experience sounds exciting. We'll see if it comes to fruition.

I would really consider living in North Bend vice Coos Bay if you are concerned about schools. Really take a look at which school district you are living in. My daughter went to a couple of elementary schools in Coos Bay and we wished we could get her in the NB school. Even put in for a waiver but was denied.

Thanks for giving me more to think about....would you mind telling me what you disliked about the Coos Bay experience and what is better about the schools in North Bend. Also, is the culture in the area quite liberal or conservative? I'm getting mixed messages regarding the mindset of the area.
Thanks so much.

We have lived in North Bend for eleven years and six schools have been closed during that time. My daughter hated all the schools and I will never forgive myself for subjecting her to them! There is now a charter school , I think it is called Lighthouse, but it goes only to the eighth grade.
This is a beautiful place but the mindset is conservative to the extreme. If you want good schools and a very liberal atmosphere, I urge you to consider Eugene. There is an abundance of schools there, ALL kinds, and they are very well rated. I implore you to heed my advice and to spare another child the unhappiness my own experienced!

The area used to be conservative but it has changed. All the local state representatives are democrat so we could not be too conservative. I'd say it is somewhere in the middle and changing toward liberal.
Lots of people who used to live here moved out and lots of new people have moved in. Timber industry jobs shut down over time so most of those people left the area. Many new retired people have moved into the Coos Bay/North Bend area.
I read in the paper that this last week 5 new restuarants have opened. Hey did anyone see those Killer whales in the Bay a few days ago?

I went to school here in ventura and we are planning on moving to the area so our child has a better time in school im sure none of the schools were like california schools 30-35 kids per class room maybe 5 white children in each class(picking on the white kids making it hard to learn)The teacher does everything twice so you learn half the stuff after she tranlates each thing. Can anyone tell me why north bend schools are better then coos bay?I want my son to like school not dread it (he's 6 months now) so their's still a little time.
