Usually not well insulated and the window units cost more to run than central air. In winter the heat from window unit also is very expensive and the use of general heaters can be very dangerous. It is a major cause of a lot of house fires in winter. 30 + years ago most homes had no air or heat here on the coast so the first house I rented we depended on window fans and heaters. We were on the river so usually had a breeze and even having a pool on the other side of the house kept our house cooler on summer nights but we froze in the winter.
