Ok so my husband & I just moved to Castle Rock, Colorado almost a year ago from a small country town in, Illinois. We grew up in IL and never moved out of state before and have wanted to all our life (we are in our 30's). Now that we finally got out of IL I wonder if we picked the right place. My husband & I were in the construction industry and it is basically non-existant in IL -after being laid off and going through financial destruction we packed it up. My hubby got a job at an online university as a Training Manager in CO and is now also going back to college. But we only have his sister an hour away for family and all the friends we had through my husbands work had gotten fired (whole other story!)and are moving away....
Do we stay in a wonderful community with no friends and hardly any family? Going back to IL seems out of the question...but my parents live in Florida most of the year and so does my hubbys mom...So we were considering moving to Florida...but I am afraid I won't like the super hot summers, humidity, bugs, crime, and hurricanes....seems like more negatives than positives!!!

I also have realized that I do not like cold or snowy winters and Colorado had been pretty mild compared to IL but still gets snow and pretty cold....
ugh...I don't know what to do - pack it up again!?! We have 4 kids by the way and I don't want to screw up their lives when they seem to just be getting settled....But I hate the winters & miss my family....

What part of Florida? If you live in the center of the state hurricanes aren't even a concern. Crime is everywhere, I've never been a victim but you just have to pick safe places to live and hang out. It is hot during he summer but the winters are awesome, plus we have gorgeous beaches!

Default When in doubt...

With all things being equal, most will tell you to go where the family is. Unfortunately, all things are not equal in your present circumstances, and there are so many variables in your personal equation. First, and foremost, you have a family with four kids.... you (and your spouse) need employment fast. Your spouse's area of expertise is in construction, an occupation still being devastated by the recession. Florida today is not the place to "rebuild" your lives within the hopes of finding meaningful employment in the construction field.... there is a reason why most of the state is still dealing with double digit unemployment and much of it can be attributed to the housing busts. Even if your husband would find a Florida construction job, you would need to work, as well, because it is typically rare that his wages/benefits will remotely come close to what was earned in Illinois or Colorado.

Your best bet would probably be to go to where the money is (where enough can be earned to support yourselves) in the short term, having as little debt accumulate in the process. This is usually attained with the help of family, especially for your kids, nearby. The key will be for your husband (and/or you) find a means to re-educate yourselves to find real skilled and meaningful employment sometime in your futures. It would be only then, that you will be able to find and live a financially secure lifestyle in Florida. Just my two cents.....

thanks for the input - we are looking at Saint Cloud/Kissimmee area (my parents have a house on West Lake Toho. I would need to be close to them so my mom can watch my kids so I can work (another problem out here in CO is daycare is really expensive and I have no family to watch kids!) My husband and I are now out of the construction industry and he is working for an online university (as stated above) and he would continue in that industry and FL seems to have alot of colleges - both online and regular which he could work at.
I am mostly concerned about the schools and safety for my kids...no offense to Floridians cuz I might become one - but it always seems like the horrible child murder/abduction stories always happen there...(I know it can happen anywhere but the violent crime rate in Castle Rock is a 1 compared to the volent crime rate in Saint Cloud a 7!)

sorry but i live in central florida and in 2004 we got directly hit by 4 hurricanes !!!!!!!!!!!! and one did a lot of damage.....
I lived in Castle Rock for a short while, and crime is definately a lot higher here than in Castle Rock, and the schools are way better in Colorado, believe me ( my husband works for the school district here , so I know both from being a parent and from a spouse who works in it)
also, unemployment is lower in Colorado than it is here.
given the choice I would stay there, but that is my opinion..
