Default A little confused...help please

I'm trying to get a feel for the areas surrounding the City of Orlando. People seem to lump a huge area around the city in with Orlando. For instance, is Kissimmee part of Orlando or does it function on it's own? When I hear all this crime "in Orlando," is this crime in a certain area of the city or does it radiate 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 miles out of the city? Coming for another large city, when I meet people I say I'm from the city, but in all reality I'm in a suburb 30 miles out.

I hope someone gets what I'm asking. I'm just a little confused as to where all this crime is taking place.

Help is greatly appreciated!

thx riveree.

Default the crime is in pockets

Like I've posted before, all the talk is about specific high crime areas. Unfortunately new ones have popped up with time as the city grows and some of the more economical areas get populated with trash, but it all depends. There are some nice and affordable neighborhoods where neighbors try to keep things in check. When people talk about orlando they mean the greater orlando area, you have to specify more in order to know which areas you would like to know more about.

Hope this helps...

Kissimmee functions on its own. It's a city with a mayor and all that.
Some areas of Orlando have higher crime than others (west of I-4 from what I hear). Same thing for Kissimmee. It's like everywhere else I guess.

As a whole, it's pretty safe over here. I don't fear for my life when I go somewhere, whether it's in Orlando, Kissimmee or out here in Poinciana.

I am a Floridian but have lived in other states to....i would say that the difference of lets say the Orlando area compared to another city the same size out of state is that in the city limits of Orlando there is Pine Hills and the Paramore division and parts of Kirkman and some other areas that arent where you would want to pick as a destination to raise a kid if you wanted them to have a better chance at thier future......but on top of that the suburbs for the most part are nice "BUT" in some suburbs you have the same exact problems or pockets of ghetto areas as in the city of Orlando, and i never saw the other states i lived in being like this.

For instance in Apopka which is about 15 miles from downtown you have places in that town that are dirty as hell and you will see some drug dealers or thugs just walking around or bumy looking people around but there are nice parts too....

and in Sanford there is a large part of the historic Sanford that i personally got lost in and saw a homeless guy walking with a cart with his stuff and a bunch of other bums along the way around the downtown area and i made a turn to get out and ended up in BO-Key where you see streets of thugs standing on the corner and drug dealers......

and then in Altamonte/Cassleberry you have a little neighborhood right off of 17-92 and 436 where the McDonalds is and where that ghetto azz club is and ive seen police lights and ambulances in that area "alot" and ive driven back in that area just to see what it was like when we first moved there and it is a little ghetto about half a mile long filed with lots of what any innercity ghetto has and that area is way out in the suburbs but most of Altamonte is nice though....

then there is the area near Lake Underhill and Semoran i used to live over there and it is Little Puerto Rico mixed with a couple mexicans here and there....i always saw ambulances at that gas station off of 436 and Stonewall Jackson.....they had a couple shootings when i lived there in that neighborhood....it is in the East Orlando area not to far from the Airport......

Then there is winter park...that has been cleaned up a little but i remember before the movie theater was built there that it was really ghetto in the area where the movies are now....its not the worst area but i saw some thugs and drug dealers in a little section of that suburb right behind the movie theatres and i saw this guy walking down the street lookin dusty as hell and he had a fresh black eye and looked like he had just got jumped over there and that was right behind the movie theatres...but most of the Orlando area is nice but in every nice area it seems there is a ghetto to be found.......

I didnt see that in other cities i lived in......Like in Nashville or San Fransisco or when i lived in Texas.....Florida is weird like that

Miami-Dade county is probably the worst as far as ghettos being in the suburbs...take for instance Opa-Locka and Miami Gardens and even Homestead or Little haitti/North Miami...those places arent even in the city and the whole towns would be considered a ghetto if you were from any other metro area....the whole North Part of Dade county is a majority ghetto with the exception of a few places in Hialeah and Miami Lakes/PSN, and right over by the water on the beach in those areas like Aventura and Sunny Isles and most other beach cities but its hard to find a part of the Miami-Dade county area that doesnt have pockets of ghetto
